Lexus recommends that your RX 350 undergo an oil and filter change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles—but this range will vary based on your vehicle and driving habits.
New and high-quality oil is essential to a healthy vehicle. Not only does it reduce friction, but oil also prevents important components from bumping against one another. Over prolonged periods, oil can pick up debris and lose its viscosity—resulting in a thick, metallic sludge capable of severely damaging your engine.
Every car differs in how you should approach an oil change. Luckily, the car insurance comparison and broker app Jerry has the information you need to change the oil in a Lexus RX 350.

How often does a Lexus RX 350 need an oil change?

Lexus recommends changing your RX 350’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles with conventional 0W-20. Synthetic oil should be changed 7,000 to 10,000 miles—but, to prevent damage, you should never pass the 10,000-mile threshold.

What kind of oil does a Lexus RX 350 need?

A new Lexus RX 350 will usually require synthetic 0W-20 oil
Many drivers prefer this synthetic oil to improve vehicle performance. Additional additives ensure that 0W-20 runs at its best no matter the conditions—from winter frost to summer heat.
Always use your owner's manual to ensure you’re putting in the correct oil. Using non-manufacturer recommended oil can drastically impact vehicle performance, engine longevity, and even void your warranty.

How much does an oil change cost for a Lexus RX 350?

The price of an oil replacement will depend on if you do it yourself or go to a dealer or mechanic.

Professional cost

An average shop will charge between $147 and $160 to change the oil on a Lexus RX 350. This can be broken into $65-96 for labor and around $96 for parts. This does not include taxes or additional fees.

DIY cost

If you have the necessary tools on hand, you'll only have to pay for the oil—this too can range in price.
  • 1 quart: $6.49 to $12.49
  • 5 quarts: $24.99 to $39.99

How to change the oil in a Lexus RX 350 yourself

What you’ll need

  • 0W-20 oil (6.4 quarts)
  • Lexus RX 350 oil filter kit
  • 17mm wrench
  • ⅜-inch square socket adaptor
  • Vehicle ramps
  • Drain pan with at least 6-quart capacity
  • Funnel

1. Open the hood and locate oil cap

To replace your oil, you’ll need to ensure you have the right tools. Before starting the process, make sure you know the location of your oil cap and dipstick.
Run the engine for a few minutes until it reaches normal operating temperature. Then, you’re good to go.

2. Secure the car

Drive your car onto vehicle ramps to better reach the underside of your engine. Consider using chocks to keep your wheels from rotating.

3. Remove oil filter drain cap

Using the ⅜ inch square socket adaptor, remove the drain cap. From there, screw on a plastic drain nipple from the kit.
Drain the oil and let it flow into the drain pan.

4. Remove oil filter housing cap and O-rings on filter housing

Using the same wrench, remove the oil filter housing cap. New O-rings can be found in the filter kit and attached by hand.

5. Replace drain plug gasket

Replace the drain plug gasket—this keeps oil from leaking from the drain cap and can build up lots of debris over time.

6. Reinstall filter and drain plug

Once the oil has been completely drained from the vehicle (into the pan), you can add the new filter and reinstall the drain plug.

7. Add oil and test engine

Lastly, add 6 quarts of the approved oil, pouring through the funnel
To test, run your vehicle’s engine for a few minutes then check the oil with the dipstick. If the level drops, turn off the engine and top it off again.

What happens if you don’t change the oil on a Lexus RX 350?

Clean oil is essential to your engine system. If left unchanged, oil can become thick and lose its viscosity—what enables engine parts to grind against each other. Some possible types of damage from old oil include
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Reduced fuel efficiency
  • Engine overheating
  • Engine corrosion
Not replacing your oil on time will cause your engine components to wear quickly. In the worst cases, excessive heat will cause irrevocable damage—or total engine failure.

How to save money on car insurance
