Land Rover
, “small” probably isn’t a word that springs to mind. The maker has built a reputation on massive, rugged-yet-luxurious SUVs that not only look the part, but have some serious off-road capabilities as well. But what if you don’t have a ton of kids or cargo to haul around and just really like the performance (and let’s be honest, status) of a Range Rover? Enter the Range Rover Evoque

What is the smallest SUV Land Rover makes?

The wee baby of the Land Rover family is the compact SUV, the Range Rover Evoque
The Evoque measures 172.1 inches long and 64.9 inches wide and has a curb weight of 3,935 pounds. Seating will accommodate five, although the rear seat has been reported to be a bit on the cramped side—especially when compared with other luxury compact SUVs. There’s 21.6 cubic feet of cargo room behind the front seat, which increases to 50.5 cubic feet with the seats down.
Under the hood, two options are available—a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine and a mild hybrid version of the same. Folks who are hoping for better fuel economy with the mild hybrid will be a tad disappointed, as it only increases the combined fuel economy rating from 22 to 23 mpg. That being said, it’s Land Rover’s most fuel-efficient vehicle. The Evoque can generate a total of 246 horsepower and can get from 0 to 60 in 7 seconds
Land Rover’s exceptional off-road capabilities are present and accounted for as well, with a ground clearance of 8.3 inches, competitive approach and departure angles, and a wading depth of almost two feet
The Evoque starts at $46,400, which makes it a little pricier than other compact luxury SUVs that have more interior space and a better driving experience. But if you want the panache of a Range Rover without the bulk, it will most certainly do the job.

Other smaller Land Rover SUVs

Though Land Rovers are generally prone to being on the larger side, there are a few other daintier members of the family tree. Let’s take a look!

Climb in the jump seats, kids: Discovery Sport

Starting price: $44,600
Wheelbase: 107.9 inches
Seating capacity: Five (plus an optional extra 2 in the back)
The next step up in both price and size is the
Land Rover Discovery Sport
. This model has two additional seats in the back that can be unfolded to seat up to seven people, although the third row will definitely be a small-kids-only zone. This will cut the cargo space down to just under seven cubic feet when the third row is in use, but if you want a bit more versatility in seating while still staying in the realm of a compact SUV, it’s an option. With all the seats folded, you’ll get a maximum of 60 cubic feet of storage and 32.2 cubic feet behind the second row.
Unless you really want both three rows of seats and a compact vehicle, it seems like there are better options out there. But the Discovery Sport is one of Land Rover’s most popular models, so it must be working for a lot of folks.

Get funky with it: Range Rover Velar

Starting price: $60,300
Wheelbase: 113 inches
Seating capacity: Five
The
Range Rover Velar
is listed on Land Rover’s site as “the avant-garde Range Rover,” and to be honest, we’re not quite sure what they mean by that. Are the instrument clusters arranged in a Picasso-esque fashion? Does the voice recognition periodically spout nonsequiturs in German? At any rate, The Velar seats five and has a maximum cargo capacity of 63.9 cubic feet, so you should have plenty of room to get artistic with your grocery and luggage packing while still having a small enough profile to navigate the city streets.

Hey, big spender: Range Rover Sport

Starting price: $83,000
Wheelbase: 118 inches
Seating capacity: Five
Depending on who you listen to, either the Range Rover Sport or the Discovery Sport is the most popular model of Land Rover. We’re now firmly in the midsize category here, but the seating remains at a max capacity of five. The price tag has definitely grown as well, as the Range Rover Sport is almost twice as expensive as the Evoque, with its starting price of $83,000
The total cargo space is a healthy 118 cubic feet, with 31.9 cubic feet available behind the second row. The Range Rover Sport is also a mild hybrid and packs a total of 355 horsepower and a 0 to 60 time of 5.4 seconds

The best alternatives to Land Rover’s smallest SUV

If you don’t absolutely have to have a Land Rover, there are plenty of premium small SUVs out there for you to consider. Here are three top contenders in the realm of luxury compact SUVs:

Fun, functional, and fully-loaded: Volvo XC40

The playful and stylish
Volvo XC40
starts at a far more attainable $36,195, and comes nicely equipped with standard features at all trim levels. A well-designed interior and a generous amount of cargo space helped the Volvo XC40 earn a 9.5/10 from Car and Driver, as well as the number one recommendation among the class.

Baby Bimmer SUV: BMW X1

Taking the number two spot on Car and Driver’s rankings is the
BMW X1
, with a starting price of $36,395. The X1 was also praised for its peppy driving experience and nicely designed interior, but lost a few points for some bland styling. But it’s still a BMW, and it starts at $10,000 less than the Evoque.

Luxury experience without the expense: Mazda CX-5

If you’re not married to the idea of a premium name, then you would do well to consider the
Mazda CX-5
. Starting between $26,700 and $39,650, Mazda has a well-earned reputation for delivering a luxurious feel, great driving experience, and top-notch reliability—all at a much friendlier price point.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
