The 2022
Toyota Corolla Cross
is budget-friendly and quite safe, but the
Subaru Crosstrek
has stronger engines and better off-road capabilities. It's even available as a plug-in hybrid.
The small SUV segment is blowing up with amazing vehicles that offer the best of both worlds: the fuel efficiency and convenience of a compact car, plus the increased comfort and flexibility of an SUV. The Crosstrek has been on the market since 2013 and has served as a crowd favorite, but the all-new Corolla Cross enters as a worthwhile competitor.
To help you take a closer look at both models,
Jerry
—the top-rated
car insurance
app for savings—has created this handy guide. We’ll compare important specs like pricing, interior sizing, fuel efficiency, and more. Let’s get started.

Pricing

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is affordable, as even the highest trim doesn’t reach $30,000. However, the Subaru Crosstrek is only slightly more expensive—just a few hundred dollars more when you compare trim-to-trim.
The only major pricing differences occur at the Crosstrek’s upper trim levels, especially with the hybrid.

When it comes to the cost of ownership, the Corolla Cross only beats out the Crosstrek by a couple thousand dollars. According to Edmunds, the five-year ownership costs for the Corolla Cross are estimated at around $32,108. This includes Toyota Corolla Cross insurance cost of $4,477.
On the other hand, the Crosstrek should cost you about $35,954 for five years. Interestingly, it’s actually cheaper to insure—the
Subaru Crosstrek insurance cost
is an estimated $4,113.

Performance

The Subaru Crosstrek offers more diverse drivetrain options, and at higher trim levels, it is significantly more powerful than the Corolla Cross.
Every 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross comes equipped with a 169-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available as an upgrade.
The Crosstrek’s base engine is slightly less powerful—a 152-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with your choice of either automatic or manual transmission. Subarus come with all-wheel drive as well.
However, a much more powerful 182-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is also available, as well as a plug-in hybrid model that proves to be the quickest model of the bunch.

Fuel efficiency

When it comes to fuel efficiency, the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is the obvious winner with a combined fuel efficiency rating of 90 MPGe. However, even the gas-powered models somewhat outperform the Toyota Corolla Cross on the highway.
Take a look at the EPA ratings for each gas-powered model:
Model
Fuel economy (city/highway)
2022 Toyota Corolla Cross (all trims)
31/33 mpg
2022 Subaru Crosstrek (2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine)
28/33 mpg
2022 Subaru Crosstrek (2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine)
27/34 mpg

Technology

When it comes to infotainment technology, the Corolla Cross and Subaru Crosstrek are actually quite similar.
The Corolla Cross offers a 7.0- or 8.0-inch infotainment display, standardly equipped with Toyota’s straightforward interface, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Wireless smartphone charging, rear-seat USB charging ports, and a JBL stereo system are all optional extras.
Similarly, the Subaru Crosstrek has a StarLink infotainment system that comes standard with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, Bluetooth support, and a USB port. Buyers can upgrade to a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen with SiriusXM satellite radio and optional navigation.
In terms of standard safety technology, however, the vehicles begin to differ. The Subaru Crosstrek earns a 5/5 star rating from the NHTSA, but buyers must shell out extra cash for automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.
On the other hand, Toyota makes a habit out of standardizing driver-assistance features, and the Corolla Cross is no exception. Every model automatically comes equipped with automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control.

Reliability

When it comes to reliability, you can’t really go wrong with either vehicle—the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek and Toyota Corolla Cross are truly neck-and-neck.
The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek earned a reliability score of 83/100 from J.D. Power, making it the No. 3 small SUV on the market. The Toyota Corolla cross is a single step behind with an overall rating of 82/100, making it the #4 vehicle in its class.
The Corolla Cross also earns a respectable 4.5/5 rating from RepairPal, which estimates the vehicle’s annual repair costs at just $362. The Crosstrek’s ratings are identical, but repair costs are estimated to be higher, at $492.

Interior

The lower trims of both models are no-nonsense and basic, but the Toyota Corolla Cross does a slightly better job at spicing things up at upper trim levels. The
XLE
model comes with attractive leather upholstery, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and a flip-down center armrest for rear-seat passengers.
The Crosstrek, on the other hand, only adds minor upgrades like leather seats, faux-carbon-fiber trim, and orange stitching on the seats—which don’t necessarily feel worth the splurge.
In terms of measurements, the vehicles are quite similar, except when it comes to back seat legroom. Adults may feel significantly more comfortable in the back seat of a Subaru thanks to an extra 4.5 inches of space. Take a look:

If you’re looking to transport cargo, however, you’ll find some extra space in the back of a Corolla Cross. This model offers up to 26.2 cubic feet of trunk space, depending on whether the vehicle has front- or all-wheel drive.

The final word

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is only a bit more expensive than the Toyota Corolla Cross. But it also offers better engine options, increased fuel efficiency, and a little more space in the back seat.
But that doesn’t mean the Corolla Cross is a bad option—it’s actually the safer vehicle and boasts significantly more trunk space. Either way, you’ll be purchasing a reliable little SUV that should last you for many years to come.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
