What Is the Smallest Chevy SUV?

The Chevrolet Trax is the smallest Chevy SUV, but it’s not the only small option in their lineup.

background
The Chevy Trax is the smallest Chevy SUV on the market today, measuring just 167.2 inches long and able to seat up to five passengers. It’s technically the only small SUV from the manufacturer, but the midsize SUVs in Chevrolet’s lineup don’t get much bigger.
Bigger doesn’t always mean better when it comes to an SUV. On the contrary, bigger SUVs almost always mean higher maintenance costs and unrelenting gas consumption. Unless you regularly transport seven or more passengers, a big, bad SUV may be just that — bad
Small SUVs, on the other hand, have a bit more pep in their step when it comes to style and fuel economy, and Chevy has its fair share for you to choose from! Here to walk you through the smallest of Chevy’s SUVs — the Chevy Trax — and its comparably sized siblings is

What is the smallest SUV Chevrolet makes?

The absolute smallest Chevy SUV is the
Chevrolet Trax
. This small and simple utility vehicle starts at $22,595 and meets the baseline of expectations without going above and beyond.
Measuring just 167.2 inches long and 64.9 inches high, this small SUV has a zippy — if not somewhat smushed—appearance. Despite being relatively tall, the Trax manages confident handling with little lean as it whips around tight corners. Its fuel economy is average (though not disappointingly so) at 27 combined mpg.
The Trax’s small, agile package is complete with the SUV basics — AWD, a spaciously tall driver’s seat, and a satisfactory cargo capacity. The Trax has 18.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, which can collapse to expand that space to 48.4 cubic feet. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, but don’t expect much more in terms of creature comforts than that.
The Trax is undeniably sparse when it comes to standard features beyond the most basic of connectivity and safety technology. Even some of today’s common safety features—like forward-collision warning and rear parking sensors—are only available as an add-on. Spending an additional $1800 for the higher LT trim can remedy this noticeable lack of included amenities.

Other small Chevrolet SUVs

While the Trax is the smallest of the pack, Chevy makes several other SUVs that are relatively close in size. Take a look at the small and midsize SUV offerings from Chevrolet in our quick list below.

Smallest: 2022 Chevrolet Trax

Starting price: $22,595
Wheelbase: 100.6 inches
Seating capacity: Five
This teeny ute is economical in price point and gas consumption. Just don’t expect much from this SUV’s sparse interior and simple 155-hp 1.4-L four-cylinder engine.

Small: 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Starting price: $22,995
Wheelbase: 103.9 inches
Seating capacity: Five
The
Chevrolet Trailblazer
is basically a smaller version of the midsize Chevy Blazer. As such this SUV offers a bit more than the basic Trax in a similarly sized (and similarly priced) package!
The Trailblazer adds on a few inches, but it also adds on more standard safety features — like lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist — and 6 more cubic feet of minimum cargo space. The second row of seats and the front-row passenger seat can all fold flat for maximized and optimized transportation of goods — a feature that the smaller Trax lacks.
The only thing that lags about the Trailblazer compared to the Trax is its engine—a standard 137-hp turbocharged three-cylinder. However, this measly powertrain manages a formidable 30 combined mpg fuel economy rating.

Small-ish: 2022 Chevrolet Equinox

Starting price: $27,695
Wheelbase: 107.3 inches
Seating capacity: Five
The
Chevrolet Equinox
may be small by comparison to other Chevy models, but this compact crossover does not feel small by any means. A comfortable and functional cabin is one of the Equinox’s strongest features with spacious seating and flat-folding seats—although the total cargo space isn’t winning any awards compared to competitors.
Compared to its smaller siblings, the Equinox is well-fitted with attractive standard infotainment and safety features. However, this SUV’s 170-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine has received criticism for underwhelming performance.

The best alternatives to Chevrolet’s smallest SUV

If the Trax is just a little too sparse for your liking, the Trailblazer a better-equipped small option for an incredibly comparable price. Still not convinced? Take a look at some of Chevy’s competition in the small SUV market: the Jeep Renegade, the Mazda CX-30, and the Honda HR-V.

Rugged by reputation: 2022 Jeep Renegade

The 2022
Jeep Renegade
delivers the Jeep brand in a tiny box—literally! This cube-shaped ute is what some would call a cute alternative offering from the manufacturer’s more traditional line-up of SUVs, but it doesn’t accomplish nearly as much.
Starting at $26,290, the base Renegade is a tad bit pricier than most of its subcompact rivals, and it’s not nearly as capable as its larger — albeit more expensive — siblings. An underwhelming turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine comes standard on all trims, but drivers looking for off-road capability will need to dish out an additional $6,000+ for the top-tier
Trailhawk
trim
Like the Trax, all-wheel drive is available, and the fuel economy is incredibly comparable. For the extra price, the Renegade includes many more standard connectivity and safety features, and its seats fold flat for more efficient cargo expansion.

Balling on a budget: 2022 Mazda CX-30

If the Jeep Renegade is a bit too eclectic for your tastes, take a look at the much more refined and lush
Mazda CX-30
starting at a more approachable $23,725.
The Mazda name comes with certain expectations for performance and style, and even the CX-30 does not disappoint. Every trim level comes standard with all-wheel drive and a formidable package of safety and convenience features. Higher trim offerings provide real-world luxury options, but no matter what, you’ll be riding your CX-30 in comfort.
Much like the rest of the competition, the CX-30 doesn’t deliver the most speed or power, but an optional turbocharged engine bumps the engine output up to 250 horsepower. It won’t get your Mazda accelerating any faster, but it does make for a fun, athletic ride.

A compact with an upgrade: 2023 Honda HR-V

Starting at $24,895, the upcoming 2023
Honda HR-V
marks a new generation and an overall redesign for this compact Honda staple. Ironically, part of that redesign includes a slightly longer and wider design, but this SUV is still one of the tinier drivers on the market.
Other upgrades include a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine — though it doesn’t feel like one — and an athletic chassis shared with the Honda Civic. This new generation also features more driver assistance and infotainment features than past models.
One of the downfalls of this new generation is the loss of the second-row Magic Seat that could flip down for optimized cargo space. While numbers for cargo space are currently not available, Honda claims that there is more volume and different design elements that aid in the compact SUV’s storage functionality.
