Weighing in at 3,593 pounds and standing tall at 68.7 inches, the Mitsubishi Outlander is a stylish, safe, and roomy compact crossover SUV and one of the few in its class that offers a third row of seating. Newly redesigned for the 2022 model year, the Outlander is more spacious, more stylish, and more responsive than previous incarnations.

Technically, the Outlander can seat seven, but the third row is quite cramped and should only be used as a last resort. The interior has been upgraded with high-quality trimmings and a more modern sensibility. As for cargo, the Outlander has grown by a cubic foot, and now offers 79.7 cubic feet of storage on top of its 2000-pound towing capacity.

As far as performance goes, the Outlander’s steering is quick and its suspension is athletic but, under the hood, it’s outfitted with a modest 181-horsepower four-cylinder engine capable of going from 0 to 60 in one commercial break. The Outlander’s 27 combined mpg is competitive among gas-only compact crossovers, while the plug-in hybrid’s 78 MPGe is top-ten in its class.

With a starting price of $27,290, the Outlander is one of the more expensive compact crossovers. However, that price is justified by a smorgasbord of safety tech features that helped it earn a five-star NHTSA safety rating, including blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and a backup camera. Mitsubishi’s MI-PILOT semi-autonomous driving technology is available on higher trims, as is a 10-speaker Bose sound system, wireless charging, and Mitsubishi Connect abilities.
