8 Top Honda HR-V Competitors

The 2022 HR-V is competing against a growing lineup of subcompact SUVs. Here's how it stacks up.

The Honda HR-V remains a popular choice among buyers wanting a subcompact crossover SUV that can get the kids to school on time and haul all their sports equipment, too. But with more automakers jumping into the subcompact crossover market, the HR-V looks a little dated when compared to a few of its rivals.
The 2022 HR-V has notably feeble acceleration but impressive cargo volume. There are no standard driver assistance features and no infotainment touchscreen on the base trim level. However, the HR-V has comfortable seating and an attractive, mature-looking exterior design.
If you’re thinking about buying the HR-V but haven’t firmly decided yet, take a look at some of its rivals to see how it stacks up. Start with this guide from

1. Hyundai Kona

Starting price: $22,595 to $29,895
Selling points: Perky, quirky, and fun to drive
Weak spot: Takes subcompact to a whole new level with limited cargo and passenger room
The 2022
Hyundai Kona
has lots of updates and upgrades for the 2022 model year, including a new exterior makeover and little niceties like ambient interior lighting and a larger 8-inch standard touchscreen display.
The Kona has two engine configurations to choose from. The first, a 2-liter four-cylinder, produces up to 147 horsepower. An available 195-horsepower, turbocharged, 1.6-liter four-cylinder will cost a little extra, but it makes the drive more exhilarating.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard on the Kona, but there is no standard wireless connectivity to the car’s infotainment system. You’ll have to pay extra for that. The Kona does offer lots of standard safety features, though, like automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, driver attention monitor, and lane departure warning

2. Kia Soul

Starting price: $20,585 to $29,185
Selling points: If boxy is your thing, the Kia Soul is your car
Weak spot: Lacking standard driver assistance features
The 2022
Kia Soul
offers a relatively large 10.3-inch touchscreen display with built-in navigation on all but the base LX trim, which has an 8-inch touchscreen but no navigation. That’s a bit more generous than some of its contemporaries.
The Soul’s standard engine is a 147-horsepower 2-liter four-cylinder. However, if you opt for the highest-priced Turbo trim, you’ll get a turbocharged 201-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that will move the Soul from 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds, compared to the base engine’s 8 seconds.

3. Subaru Crosstrek

Starting price: $24,320 to $36,770
Selling points: Appearance and handling that reflects Subaru’s trademark Overlanding appeal
Weak spot: Sedate base engine, not particularly off-road capable
Subaru’s famous standard all-wheel drive accompanies three engine options on the 2022
Crosstrek
. The most powerful, found on the Sport trim, is a 182-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder.
At the other end of the spectrum is the underwhelming base engine, a 152-horsepower four-cylinder that takes a grueling 9.2 seconds to get up to 60 mph. The hybrid model isn’t much faster, but it at least brings the benefit of better fuel economy.
The Subaru’s interior is functional but not fancy. There’s a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen with infotainment connectivity, but the screen is upgraded to 8 inches on the higher trim levels.

4. Nissan Kicks

Starting price: $21,285 to $23,845
Selling points: Fuel-sipping efficiency with a low price tag
Weak spot: Engine feels lethargic and acceleration is dull
Labeled an SUV but only available with front-wheel drive, the 2022
Nissan Kicks
is clearly an urban commuter more than it is an off-roader. There’s just one engine configuration available, and it’s a 122-horsepower four-cylinder that’s low on energy but big on efficiency
A 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display comes standard, as does a generous offering of driver assist and safety features, like automated emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and lane-departure warning. For an extra cost, you can opt-in for adaptive cruise control, too.

5. Buick Encore

Starting price: $26,415
Selling points: Classy, upscale exterior appearance and decent cabin room
Weak spot: A little slow and only one trim level to choose
The 2022
Buick Encore
isn’t as efficient as other subcompact SUVs in part due to its new engine that’s a little more powerful than last year’s. It’s a 155-horsepower turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard front-wheel drive. You can get all-wheel drive for about $600 more.
The interior offers comfortable seating for the front and rear passengers if you’re seating four adults. You can squeeze in five in a pinch. A 7-inch infotainment touchscreen includes 4G LTE data and wi-fi connectivity, but the driver assist and safety tech features are lacking.

6. Mazda CX-3

Starting price: $21,965
Selling points: Upscale cabin materials, drives more like a car than an SUV
Weak spot: Just one trim available, and production ceased after the 2021 model year
We don’t have a 2022
Mazda CX-3
to review, so if you want to buy one, you’ll have to find an unsold 2021 model or settle for used. In its last model year, the CX-3 was only sold in the Sport trim, but you had an option to upgrade from front-wheel drive to all-wheel drive for about $1,400. Either drivetrain was matched with the model’s single engine configuration, a 146-horsepower four-cylinder that poked along from 0-60 mph in 8.1 seconds
Tech features were the CX-3’s standout traits. It included a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display, automatic climate control, automated emergency braking, heads-up display, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring.

7. Jeep Renegade

Starting price: $26,290 to $32,740
Selling points: Fun-loving and quirky box-shaped exterior, the cheapest new Jeep you can get
Weak spot: Interior feels cheap even on higher trim levels
The 2022
Jeep Renegade
has six trim options to choose from, but only one, the Trailhawk, is off-road ready. All the rest could do soft-roading for weekend warriors. The Renegade’s 177-horsepower turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine delivers weak acceleration but nice low-end torque to give it plenty of power in lower gears.
Front-wheel drive is standard for the six-speed automatic Renegade, but you can get an all-wheel drive for about $1,500more.
The Renegade’s impressive standard tech offerings include an 8.4-inch touchscreen display with built-in navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

8. Fiat 500X

Starting price: $28,120 to $34,100
Selling points: Standard all-wheel drive and spunky Italian styling
Weak spot: Low on both cargo and passenger volume
The 2022
Fiat 500X
offers one engine configuration across all trims. It’s a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder that produces up to 177 horsepower. It’s married to a nine-speed automatic transmission, and the standard all-wheel drive system has three drive mode settings to choose from, including Auto, All-Weather, and Sport.
The interior is attractive though not entirely pragmatic. It’s a tight fit that can supposedly seat five passengers. Each trim level includes two USB ports and a 7-inch touchscreen display equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
