With a starting MSRP of just $23,800, Honda’s subcompact crossover SUV is the most inexpensive of the Japanese automaker’s lineup.
But its impressively low price doesn’t mean you’re sacrificing quality. For 2023, the Honda HR-V received a complete redesign that improved on spaciousness and safety features, leaving even the base model well-equipped.
While the first generation of HR-Vs, released all the way back in 2016, were built on the (now discontinued) Honda Fit base, the redesign did away with the outdated hatchback frame in favor of the
Civic
base. Leveling up to the sedan-style Civic frame means there’s more room for cargo and passengers alike, especially in the back seats—but the compromise comes at the cost of Honda’s Magic Seat, a dynamic seating configuration that’s been lost to the redesign.Despite this potential drawback, the HR-V received a number of upgrades and perks that make it more appealing to the modern driver, including improved entertainment and safety features and an enhanced suite of driver assistance tech. The redesign ushers in the HR-V’s second generation.
The new-and-improved HR-V slots beneath the compact CR-V and midsize Passport and Pilot, and comes available in three trim levels: LX (base), Sport, and EX-L. Moving up in trims will amp up the price accordingly:

- EX-L: Starting at $27,900

How much cheaper is the Honda HR-V?
Following the subcompact HR-V, the next cheapest Honda is a Honda Civic sedan, which has a starting MSRP of $25,050. Given the two share a base frame, perhaps it comes as no surprise that the Civic is the next-most-affordable Honda in the lineup.
But if your heart is set on something with a little more space, you may have to up your budget. Here are the starting prices for the other new models in Honda’s lineup:

From the numbers above, it’s clear to see Honda vehicles are available at a wide range of prices. Regardless of the model you choose, if you’re looking for ways to keep the bottom line low, here are some tricks to finding an affordable Honda:
- Stick to the base model. Every Honda model is available in multipletrim levels. Higher trim levels typically come with more features and luxurious perks—often at the cost of several thousand more.
- Avoid unnecessary upgrades. Along with opting for a lower trim level, skipping over add-ons and packages can keep the overall cost of your Honda vehicle low (and it’ll help lower yourcar insurance costs, too!)
- Go used. Buying a used car doesn’t mean settling for something dated! Even going back just a few model years can earn you a lower price tag without compromising much on reliability or user-friendliness.
