The 2022 BMW X3 received a midterm facelift resulting in fresh exterior styling, a new center console design, and a 48-volt mild hybrid system for the M40i trim. 
As exciting as it is when new models are released, you’re not going to find a fully redesigned X3 at the BMW dealership each year. However, some years do offer the benefit of a facelift, which can make some minor, but impactful, improvements to the styling, trim options, and mechanics of the latest model.

Is the 2022 BMW X3 redesigned?

Not completely. But the 2022 BMW X3 did receive some minor updates to its interior and exterior styling. A bigger grille, thinner LED headlights, snazzy new taillights, and slight revisions to the bumpers are some of the most notable shifts. The option to dress the X3’s exterior in BMW’s
popular Tanzanite Blue II
metallic paint was also added. 
Aside from these exterior styling updates, the 2022 X3 also reworked some of the
2021 BMW X3’s interior
. An enhanced 10.25-inch standard touchscreen display makes infotainment navigation easier, and a reworked center console layout features easier-to-use gauges and controls. 
But the 2022 BMW X3 isn’t an entirely different beast from the 2021 X3. Here are some favorite X3 features that remain the same: 
  • Intuitive iDrive infotainment system—still chock-full of features like in-dash navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, and a Wi-Fi hot spot (not to mention over-the-air software updates)
  • Robust suite of standard driving assistance tech—including blind spot detection, lane departure warning, city collision mitigation, and frontal collision warning 
  • Dynamic Damper Control adaptive suspension option with Comfort, Sport, and Eco Pro driving modes
  • Standard 10-way power-adjustable front seats, wood grain interior trim, and tri-zone automatic climate control 
  • Class-topping 4,400-lb towing capacity when equipped with optional receiver
  • Available intelligent all-wheel drive system 
  • Versatile engine range—from the 248-hp turbocharged I-4 to the
    M Competition
    ’s gutsy 503-hp turbocharged I-6 
Though most of the powertrain systems haven’t changed, the
xDrive30e plug-in hybrid
option is an unfortunate casualty of the 2022 BMW X3’s facelift. However, the M40i did receive a 48-volt mild hybrid system update to its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine—though this didn’t actually change much in terms of performance.

2022 BMW X3 vs. 2021 BMW X3: what changed?

Between styling shifts and hybrid powertrain updates, quite a few features have been refreshed between the 2021 BMW X3 and the 2022 BMW X3. Here’s a more detailed breakdown.

Powertrain updates

The xDrive30e plug-in hybrid is no longer available in the 2022 BMW X3. While you won’t find a replacement powertrain that offers the xDrive30e’s excellent 60 MPGe combined fuel economy, the M40i does get some slight “hybridization” with a new 48-volt mild hybrid system.
That said, the M40i’s mild hybrid update still has the same 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. It gets marginally less EPA-estimated fuel efficiency at 21/26 MPG city/highway compared to the 2021 M40i’s 21/27 MPG, too.
To be fair, fuel economy isn’t really the purpose of the hybrid addition. Rather, it’s meant to smooth out the stop/restart fuel-saving feature for a more comfortable driving experience. Experts have reported that it allows for more responsiveness during acceleration as well.

Center console redesign

The center console in the 2022 BMW X3 has received some of the more significant updates. A bigger 10.25-inch touchscreen display outfits every trim, and the layout of some features and gauges has been rearranged. 
For example, the climate control dials and buttons have moved above the audio gauges directly under the vents—perhaps making them more intuitive. The vents themselves have been given a makeover with a more angular design outlined in glossed metal frames that create a more visible pop. Digital temperature setting displays are bigger and located more conveniently between the two vents rather than underneath the audio system. 
As a whole, the redesign makes navigation of the center console much more straightforward than it was in the 2021 model—especially for climate control. 

Exterior styling

Though the cosmetic tweaks to the 2022 BMW X3 are all very minor, they sharpen the X3’s look with more unique exterior accessories
The taillights have been reshaped into what BMW labels a “pincer claw contour,” and headlights have been thinned out and made more angular. The iconic BMW kidney grille has increased in size while the front and rear bumpers have been adjusted to give the SUV a more muscular appearance. At the back of the vehicle, exhaust tips are lengthened to enhance their presence. 
As mentioned before, Tanzanite Blue II metallic paint is now an option across all trims. The 2022 BMW X3’s facelift has also opened up the M Sport package to the lowest trims, allowing even the sDrive30i to dress up in a racier look with larger 20-inch wheels and the Shadowline exterior black molding. 

Pricing

The BMW X3’s starting MSRP has climbed about $1,000 a year since the third generation’s 2018 debut. By 2022, the base sDrive30i trim’s MSRP begins at $44,695 (including the $995 destination fee) while the highest M40i trim starts at $57,795.
To put that in context, here are the starting MSRPs for the rest of the generation: 
  • 2021 BMW X3 sDrive30i: $43,995
  • 2020 BMW X3 sDrive30i: $42,945
  • 2019 BMW X3 sDrive30i: $41,995
While the 2018 BMW X3 didn’t have an sDrive30i model when the third generation was introduced, its lowest xDrive30i trim cost $43,650 compared to the 2022 xDrive30i’s $46,695 starting MSRP. 

Should you buy a 2022 BMW X3? 

Should you opt for the 2022 BMW X3 or wait for a new generation? Since the X3’s fourth generation isn’t expected to launch until late 2024, we’d say yes. 
That said, BMW will likely add more EV options in the next generation, so if you’re holding out for a hybrid, it may be worth the wait. You could even go for an older model (with the plug-in hybrid option available) to save some money on a vehicle nearly identically equipped to the 2022 X3. Older third-generation M40i models may just experience a less satisfying performance from the stop/restart fuel-saving function than the 2022 model. 
What we do know for sure is that the 2023 BMW X3 has pretty much no changes from the 2022 model’s design. While some package features shift around in this latest X3, you’ll actually lose some software tech (like gesture controls) if you go for the 2023 X3 over the 2022 model. You will gain remote proximity keyless entry across all trims, though, if you really hate digging around for your key fob to unlock your car.
