As you can see, not much changed in terms of general performance specs, which helps explain why each of the 2023 and 2022 Ford Ranger trims have an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway for a combined 23 mpg.
The Rangers with the 4x2 drivetrains, that is.
If you opt for a 4x4 drivetrain, these numbers start to differ slightly. The 2022 4WD Ranger gets 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and a combined 21 mpg, while the 2023 4WD Ranger gets 20 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and a combined 22 mpg. So, by EPA estimates, the all-wheel drive 2023 Ranger gives you a very slight boost in efficiency for city driving.
Safety ratings
When it comes to safety ratings and features on both model years, it’s win some, lose some. And if you’re thinking of buying either, you’ll want to know where they excel—and where they fall short.
Let’s start with the 2022 Ford Ranger. It comes standard with safety features like forward collision warning and crash-imminent braking, and lane departure warning is optional at the base level.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives it a four-star overall safety rating. It gets five stars for its crashworthiness on the front driver side and four stars on the passenger side. Its side crash rating is a perfect five stars, but its rollover crash rating is three stars.
Then, there’s the fact that there’s been two recalls issued to date: one related to a potentially loose fuel line, and another related to “inadequate front windshield bonding”—so you’ll want to verify these issues have been addressed before you decide to make one your own.
Meanwhile, its safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) mostly range from “good” to “acceptable.” But it does get “marginal” ratings for several factors, like headlights, and its seat belt reminders get a “poor” rating.
The 2023 Ford Ranger gets mixed safety ratings, too. Its ratings from the NHTSA across its major categories are identical to the 2022 model, and while it’s still pretty early, no recalls have been issued yet.
Forward collision warning and crash-imminent braking are still offered as standard, and lane departure warning is optional at the base XL trim level. Additionally, standard dynamic brake support and an upgrade are optional, but unfortunately, neither option satisfies the NHTSA’s criteria.
So far, IIHS ratings for the 2023 ranger are only available for side crashworthiness, for which it gets “acceptable” ratings overall. The largest area of concern comes from its rear passenger head protection, for which it gets a “marginal” rating. While most factors in the category get “good” ratings, that’s a pretty serious area to fall short in.

Styling and interior changes
Not much has changed between the 2022 and 2023 Ford Rangers on the inside, either. At the base level, they’re both more durable and practical than stylish, and they’re relatively sparse on standard features.

Meanwhile, the 2023 Ford Ranger’s SuperCab is just slightly longer at about 73 inches, while the SuperCrew cab is about 61 inches long.
