A Toyota certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty includes a 12-month/12,000-mile Limited Warranty, a 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, 24-hour roadside assistance, and 8-year/100,000-mile coverage of hybrid-related components.
Buying a new Toyota vehicle could be an exciting choice, but you’ll often be able to get more value from a used car. Of course, buying a used car can be a risk, especially if its previous owner hasn’t properly recorded its maintenance history. But with Toyota’s CPO program, you can have peace of mind that the used vehicle’s quality is assured by its manufacturer, while also receiving robust warranty coverage.

Toyota certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty coverage

When you buy a Toyota certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle, it comes with a CPO protection plan similar to Toyota’s 3-year/36,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty.
Let’s look at what’s included when you buy a CPO vehicle from a Toyota dealership.
First off, you’ll get a full CARFAX Vehicle History Report, detailing the maintenance history of the car.
You’ll also get 12 months or 12,000 miles (whichever comes first) of a limited comprehensive warranty. This starts from the date that you purchase the vehicle, and it’s transferable free of charge. The limited warranty includes $0-deductible coverage for repair or replacement of components that break down from normal use due to manufacturer defects.
On top of this, the Toyota CPO includes a 7-year/100,000-mile Limited Powertrain Warranty, 7 years/100,000 miles of 24-hour roadside assistance, and 8-year/100,000-mile coverage for hybrid and fuel cell-related components on 2020 and new models. Note that hybrid coverage starts from the time when it was purchased as new.
This is different from an extended warranty. An extended warranty would extend the coverage of the 12-month comprehensive warranty included with the Toyota CPO warranty.

What’s covered

A Toyota CPO warranty provides a solid amount of coverage, but only specific components are covered. Here’s what’s covered under a Toyota CPO warranty:
  • Engine components
  • Transmission
  • Travel protection
  • Substitute transportation reimbursement during repair
  • Flat tire replacement
  • Roadside assistance
  • Hybrid components
  • Fuel cell components
Note that you’ll have the most robust coverage during the first year that you own your certified pre-owned vehicle, thanks to the included one-year limited warranty.

What isn’t covered

It’s true that you’ll have great coverage under Toyota’s CPO warranty, but not every single aspect of your maintenance needs will be covered. Here are some things that are specifically excluded from the limited warranty coverage:
  • Batteries
  • Hoses
  • Tubes
  • Nuts and bolts
  • Paint
  • Wheels and rims
  • Windshield wiper blades
  • interior/exterior cloth components
  • Filters and fluids
  • Brake pads, shoes, rotors, drums, and linings
  • Bumpers
  • Glass
  • Light bulbs/light assemblies

Additional benefits

It’s not just component repairs for your vehicle that are covered under the Toyota CPO warranty program. Here are some of the other perks that come with a Toyota CPO vehicle:
  • Roadside assistance: Includes towing to a Toyota service center and labor, including battery jump starts, emergency lock-out services, emergency gas delivery, and flat tire replacement
  • Substitute transportation: If your certified pre-owned vehicle is being repaired at a Toyota service center, you’ll be provided with alternative transportation.
  • Trip interruption/travel protection benefits: If your car breaks down while you’re 150 miles or more away from home, you’ll be provided with funding to reimburse your meals, lodging, and other unexpected travel costs.

Is a Toyota CPO warranty transferable?

Toyota CPO warranties are fully transferable, meaning that if you sell your pre-owned Toyota to someone new, they’ll receive all remaining warranty coverage free of charge. This helps to improve the resale value of your CPO Toyota vehicle.

Toyota CPO program certification process

If you’re still concerned about your peace of mind while driving a Toyota pre-owned vehicle, it may help to understand how their certification process works.
In order to qualify as a certified pre-owned vehicle, there are a few criteria that it needs to meet. Firstly, all CPO Toyota vehicles need to be newer than six model years old. They also need to have been driven for less than 85,000 miles. They need to have an up-to-date CARFAX Vehicle History Report, and they need to pass Toyota’s 160-point Quality Assurance Inspection.
This inspection will include a check of all parts and will replace any non-original parts with Toyota factory materials. Inspectors will then put the vehicle through a road test to ensure that it is performing as it should—if it doesn’t pass this inspection, it won’t be sold as a certified pre-owned vehicle. CPO inspection essentially guarantees that you won’t be buying a lemon.

Are Toyotas reliable?

While you’ll be getting robust coverage with a Toyota CPO warranty, you can also rest assured that if you’re buying a certified pre-owned Toyota, it’s likely going to be a very reliable vehicle.
In general, Toyota gets above-average reliability ratings. RepairPal has awarded Toyota with an above-average 4.0/5.0 reliability rating, ranking the company 8th out of 32 brands in terms of reliability.
According to J.D. Power’s 2022 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, the Toyota Motor Corporation received awards for vehicles in five different segments with the fewest reported problems, putting it on par with the General Motors Company. Toyota and Lexus (Toyota’s luxury division) ranked fifth and sixth among all manufacturers for dependability.
Let’s explore the reliability scores of two of Toyota’s most popular vehicle models, the Toyota Corolla and Toyota RAV4.

Toyota Corolla reliability scores

RepairPal ranks the Toyota Corolla as the 1st out of 36 compact cars for reliability, while J.D. power ranks it as #4.
  • RepairPal: 4.5 out of 5.0 reliability rating
  • J.D. Power: 85 out of 100 quality and reliability rating (2022)

Toyota RAV4 reliability scores

The RAV4 ranks 3rd out of 26 in RepairPal’s compact SUV category, while J.D. Power gives it the #5 spot.
  • RepairPal: 4.0 out of 5.0 reliability rating
  • J.D. Power: 81 out of 100 quality and reliability rating (2022)

Average Toyota repair costs

So just how much money can a Toyota CPO warranty save you?
RepairPal estimates that the average Toyota visits a repair shop once every three years or so, and it reports the average annual repair cost for all Toyotas as $441 per year—much lower than the average of $652 across all brands. This figure includes scheduled maintenance as well as unscheduled repairs.
So while you won’t be saving all that much within your first year, you should also consider that since this CPO warranty is included with your purchase of a Toyota certified pre-owned vehicle, you’re going to be saving at least $441 in just the first year of ownership.

Our take: Is a Toyota CPO warranty worth it?

If you want to avoid the regular risks of buying a used car, buying a pre-owned Toyota with a CPO certification is definitely worth it.
Toyotas may be quite reliable already, but since a Toyota CPO vehicle will likely cost much less than buying the same model brand-new, you’ll only be saving money. So if you planned on buying new and realize that you’d prefer to get more bang for your buck, buying a certified pre-owned vehicle is a no-brainer.
