Mercury auto insurance overview

Mercury offers auto insurance in just eleven states, but it provides home insurance, and renters insurance as well. Mercury also provides a few add-on coverages, like rental car coverage and roadside assistance.
Mercury earns an excellent A rating for financial strength from AM Best—the credit rating agency focused on insurance companies. That means Mercury can reliably cover claims if you’re in an accident.
Mercury has cheaper than average rates for many drivers, but one area the company struggles in is customer service, earning average-at-best customer reviews. Despite not being accredited by the Better Business Bureau, Mercury receives an A- rating…along with plenty of dissatisfied customer reviews.

Mercury car insurance cost

Affordable car insurance is Mercury’s biggest claim, but is that claim legit?
Yes! Average Mercury customers pay between $50 a month and $187 a month. This range is vast, but these numbers depend on a variety of factors, like driving record and your coverage limit choices. Even so, most Mercury drivers’ rates are well below the national average for both minimum coverage and full coverage.
Check out the table below to see the differences in average costs between these two policy types.

What factors does Mercury look at?

All car insurance companies employ different standards to decide on the cost of premiums for each customer. Here are some of the factors that Mercury uses to set your rates:
  • Coverage and deductible: You’ll have higher premiums if you opt for more coverage, but picking a higher deductible could save you money.
  • Credit score: Drivers with lower credit scores typically pay higher premiums than those with good credit.
  • Age: Teen drivers and senior drivers usually get stuck with higher premiums than other drivers.
  • Traffic violations: Recent tickets on your driving record lead to higher rates with any provider.
  • At-fault accidents: Having an at-fault accident on your record puts you in a high-risk driver category, leading to higher rates—even if Mercury has better rates than other companies for these drivers.
  • Location: Your specific ZIP code could lead to different rates depending on the accident statistics, weather risks, crime rates, and other factors.
  • Vehicle: Your vehicle’s age, size, make, and model all play a big role in the price of your annual premiums.

Which Mercury customers get the best rates?

While most drivers can expect to save some money on their rates by using Mercury, drivers with prior accidents usually see the best deals compared to the national average.
Check out the table below to see how Mercury’s average rates stack up against other providers.

Mercury car insurance cost with DUI

On average, Mercury customers with a DUI conviction will pay 6.41% for auto insurance. That’s 6.41% more than the national average rate without having a DUI.

Mercury car insurance cost with a speeding ticket

With a recent speeding ticket on their record, Mercury customers pay an annual rate of 10.44% on average for their car insurance. This is 10.44%more than the average rate without a ticket. Your rates will be even more expensive with more than one speeding ticket.

Mercury car insurance rates by age

Age plays a major role in the cost of car insurance premiums, and it’s no different with Mercury. The graph below outlines the different average rates for Mercury customers based on age.

Mercury car insurance cost for young drivers

As with most car insurance providers, teen drivers can expect to pay higher rates than other Mercury drivers. However, drivers 18 and under can sign up for Mercury’s MercuryGo Program, which scores driving behavior and can lead to solid discounts. Unfortunately, MercuryGo is currently only available in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Texas.
If your state doesn’t offer MercuryGo, young drivers could still earn a better rate with Mercury’s good student discount. Students with at least a 3.0 GPA, have made the Dean’s List, or are in the top 20% of their class are eligible for savings on their car insurance.

Mercury auto insurance coverage options

All insurance companies must provide the state’s liability minimum coverage, but Mercury offers a few more types of coverage if you’re looking for extra protection.
Mercury offers these types of coverage as required by the law:
On top of the legally required coverage, Mercury also provides these types of car insurance:
  • Collision insurance: If you’re involved in a collision with another car or object, or an accident like a rollover, this coverage helps pay for the damage.
  • Comprehensive insurance: This coverage pays for damages caused by events other than collisions like theft, vandalism, an animal, or severe weather.
  • Rideshare insurance: This will extend your insurance policy to cover your car when you’re driving for a rideshare service for Lyft or Uber.
  • Roadside assistance: Also called towing and labor coverage, Mercury covers services like towing, locksmiths, tire repair, tire replacement, and battery jumpstarts.
  • Rental car insurance: If your car is being repaired after an accident, this coverage provides you a reimbursement of $30 to $100 a day.

Pamela
I've been with Mercury for 5 months now and so far they've been great. When I contacted them for ID cards they sent them right away through email and mail. Their app is helpful with making payments and easy to navigate.
Rachel
I had contacted Mercury to see if I could get a rental if I had my car worked on and they promptly responded that they only provide rental if it is a claim based request. This is the best price I've had on car insurance since I've had my car for the last 2 years and I've had many carriers. Highly recommend
Lesley
I never really had to use any of their services. I can say that the last provided a decent rate when I first signed up a year ago. But at my second renewal they raised me $160 stating that costs have gone up everywhere so they have to raise their prices as well. $160!!! That ridicouls. My pay has not gone up. In fact it’s gone down. But everything else in my life has gone up. But not this much at one time. I had to leave. Other than that I had no issues.
