Overview: what is a Mercedes-Benz extended warranty?

If you’ve already got a Mercedes-Benz model in your garage or parked on the curb, you’re likely aware that the model came with a New Vehicle Limited Warranty that was included in the cost of the model. Limited warranties cover the cost of repairs related to the vehicle's design and manufacturing. The standard New Vehicle Limited Warranty plan for new Mercedes-Benz models lasts for 4 years or 50,000 miles—whichever comes first.
An extended warranty, conversely, provides extended coverage on certain repairs, even after your Mercedes-Benz’s standard warranty coverage has elapsed. Mercedes-Benz offers six term lengths for their extended warranty plan, lasting up to 7 years or 100,000 miles.
You can purchase a Mercedes-Benz extended warranty from your local Mercedes dealership at any point during the term of your car’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty. But you won’t be able to invest in extended coverage once your standard warranty lapses. Unfortunately, specific Mercedes-Benz models like the SLS and SLR are not eligible to receive extended warranty coverage. Contact your local Mercedes dealer for more information about extended coverage options for your model.

Mercedes-Benz Extended Warranty: coverage and cost

Mercedes-Benz’s extended warranty is only offered at a single protection level, but that package can be spread over six different term lengths:
  • Add 1 year of coverage, up to 75,000 miles
  • Add 1 year of coverage, up to 100,000 miles
  • Add 2 years of coverage, up to 75,000 miles
  • Add 2 years of coverage, up to 100,000 miles
  • Add 3 years of coverage, up to 75,000 miles
  • Add 3 years of coverage, up to 100,000 miles
With the maximum extended warranty term, your Mercedes-Benz model can be protected for up to 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Keep in mind, however, that covered
car repairs
can only be performed at Mercedes-Benz service centers or service centers that have been authorized for use by Mercedes. Getting warranty-covered repairs done elsewhere will result in you having to pay for repairs out of pocket.
Mercedes-Benz’s extended warranty also comes with the following benefits, regardless of term length:
  • Trip Interruption Coverage: offers reimbursement for food and lodging ($300 per day) when you experience a warranty-covered breakdown more than 100 miles from home
  • Roadside Assistance: offers
    roadside assistance
services like battery jumpstarts, tire changes, and even towing services if required

What’s covered

Regardless of the term length of your Mercedes-Benz extended warranty, you’ll enjoy the same level of coverage. The following Mercedes-Benz parts are covered under your extended warranty:
  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • Supercharger/turbocharger
  • Fuel injection system
  • Electrical systems
  • Navigation system
  • Climate control
  • Rear axle

What isn’t covered

Compared to extended warranties from other automakers, Mercedes-Benz’s protection plan is fairly bare bones. Even with your extended warranty coverage, the following Mercedes parts and systems won’t be protected:
  • Tire and rim damage
  • Brake pads and discs
  • Shock absorbers/suspension struts
  • Batteries, glass, and paint
  • Damage from improper maintenance
  • Damage from accidents or misuse
For some of these components, Mercedes-Benz does, however, offer the following appearance and road hazard protection plans:
  • Paintless Dent Repair
  • Windshield Protection
  • Term Protection
  • Key Protection
  • Guaranteed Auto Protection
  • Lease Protection
  • Interior and Exterior Protection
  • Mercedes-Benz Prepaid Maintenance
  • First Class Wheel and Tire Protection

Duration

The length of your Mercedes-Benz extended warranty is entirely up to you, though you will have to stick to one of the six term lengths offered by the automaker. Building on your standard warranty duration of 4 years or 50,000 miles, your extended warranty can provide your Mercedes with protection for another 1 to 3 years or an additional 25,000 to 50,000 miles.

Cost

Determining the exact price of extended warranty coverage from any automaker is a real guessing game, as the price of coverage is going to fluctuate wildly based on your term length, your vehicle’s make, age, mileage, and even your location. Let’s take a closer look at some estimated prices for different Mercedes-Benz models with different extended warranty lengths:

The standard deductible for a Mercedes-Benz extended warranty—that is, the amount you agree to pay out of pocket for any covered repairs—is $100, but other deductible options range from $200 to $0. The higher your deductible, the lower the overall warranty cost.

Is it worth getting a Mercedes-Benz extended warranty?

Personal preference is going to be the main deciding factor when it comes to whether or not a Mercedes-Benz extended warranty is worth it for you. That being said, a Mercedes-Benz extended warranty does come with some pros and cons that you may want to consider before investing.
  • Pro: Your repairs will cost less with an extended warranty and a deductible than they would if you had to pay for them out of pocket—so long as they are covered under your warranty.
  • Con: Under warranty, you’ll be limited to certain service centers that are Mercedes-Benz approved for your repairs, which may be inconvenient.
  • Con: Mercedes-Benz’s extended warranty coverage is less comprehensive, shorter, and more expensive when compared to the extended warranties of other automakers.
Should you choose to not extend your warranty coverage for your Mercedes, you may want to instead consider investing in
mechanical breakdown insurance (MBI)
. Similar to an extended warranty, MBI covers the cost of certain mechanical repairs—so long as they are not the result of regular wear and tear—even after your vehicle’s factory warranty has expired.
