Mazda certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty coverage

There are a few things that distinguish a certified pre-owned (CPO) Mazda from other used Mazdas, but one of the most notable differences is that a CPO Mazda comes with warranty coverage
The CPO warranty for Mazda provides drivers with a one-year or 12,000-mile warranty—whichever happens first. This is a bumper-to-bumper warranty, which means that it protects against mechanical or manufacturing defects for the whole car—with exception of the tires (those usually have a separate warranty of their own).
All brand-new Mazdas include a Limited Factory Warranty, which lasts for three years or 60,000 miles. If the CPO Mazda you purchase is still under the Limited Factory Warranty, the CPO warranty won’t take effect until the day after the Limited Factory Warranty ends. If the Limited Factory Warranty has expired on your CPO Mazda, then the CPO warranty goes into effect the day you buy the car.
Brand-new Mazdas also come with a five-year/60,000 Powertrain Warranty. The CPO warranty will extend the length of the Powertrain Warranty for a total of seven years/100,000 miles. A Powertrain Warranty will cover mechanical or manufacturing defects to components related to the engine, transmission, and front and rear drivetrains

What’s covered

When the Mazda you drive is covered under the CPO warranty, you won’t have to pay a deductible on repairs—just make sure that what needs fixing is protected under warranty coverage.
Mazda’s CPO warranty covers the following vehicle parts:
  • Engine and its crucial components
  • Transmission and its crucial components
  • Front and rear drivetrain system
  • Brakes
  • Steering
  • Suspension
  • Electrical systems

What isn’t covered

You’ll typically pay out of pocket to fix the following:
  • Tires/tire rotation
  • Battery replacement
  • Regular maintenance
  • Deterioration due to wear and tear
  • Part damage due to a car accident
It’s also important to understand that neither a Factory Limited Warranty nor a CPO warranty will pay for repairs that are due to improper maintenance, mileage tampering, or using the wrong oil or fuel

Additional benefits

Mazda’s CPO warranty is your safety net when it comes to pesky car repairs, but its protective powers don’t stop there! Mazda also throws in the following benefits:
  •  24-hour Emergency Roadside Assistance: Services like free towing to a Mazda repair facility, jumpstarts, flat tire changes, gas delivery, and assistance with lockouts are all included for no extra cost
  • Three-month trial of SiriusXM satellite radio: You’ll get tons of music and news stations plus real-time traffic and weather alerts
  • Preferred financing offers: You could be offered a lower Annual Percentage Rate (APR) when you purchase a CPO Mazda, which means a lower interest on your monthly payments

Is a Mazda CPO warranty transferable?

If you decide to sell your CPO Mazda while the warranty is still active, you’ll be happy to know that all Mazda warranties are transferable, including the CPO bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranties. Not only will the new owner inherit the warranties, but you’ll be able to command a higher resale price at the same time.

Mazda CPO program certification process

Not every gently used Mazda will qualify as a certified pre-owned vehicle. First off, a CPO Mazda cannot be more than six years old. From there, each vehicle undergoes a meticulous 160-point inspection
This inspection is performed by a trained Mazda technician who will carefully examine the vehicle, including the interior, heating and cooling systems, exterior condition, brakes, engine, transmission, and more. If anything is amiss, it gets replaced with a Mazda OEM part before being sold with a CPO warranty.
If you have any doubt about the validity of the 160-point inspection, Mazda will provide you with a complete AutoCheck® vehicle history report so that you know exactly what checkpoints your vehicle went through.
You’ll also receive a three-year BuyBack Protection policy courtesy of Experian. If the vehicle history report did not accurately disclose required information on the title, such as flood damage or a
salvage title
, this policy will buy your vehicle from you at up to 110% of the published retail value.

Are Mazdas reliable?

What if you find a great deal on a used Mazda, but it doesn’t have a CPO warranty—is it still worth buying? A CPO warranty becomes more of a priority if the vehicle in question has shaky reliability ratings. In the case of Mazda, J.D. Power ranks its reliability rating as above average
J.D. Power based Mazda’s reliability on a survey study of three-year-old vehicles across a wide range of car brands. 100 Mazda vehicles were surveyed in their reliability study and the results placed the brand just ahead of
Cadillac
and right behind
Ford
In 2020, Consumer Reports ranked Mazda number one for reliability out of the 30 brands reviewed. Mazda’s reputation for safety is a big contributor to its success.

Average Mazda repair costs

As your vehicle gets older and your CPO warranty nears its end, you might be wondering what annual repair costs are going to look like for your Mazda.
RepairPal estimates the average annual repair costs for a Mazda vehicle total $462. This is lower than the median cost across all major car brands, but it still helps to know that your CPO warranty will absorb some of the expense if one or more of your Mazda’s components malfunctions.
Transmission issues are a well-documented complaint among Mazda owners. Depending on the severity of the transmission problem, repairs could cost you anywhere between $1,800 and $3,400

Our take: is a Mazda CPO warranty worth it?

Overall, yes. One of the highlights of the Mazda CPO warranty is its generous powertrain protection
Considering that Mazdas are generally affordable, purchasing a CPO Mazda rather than a used one that lacks this certification is a worthwhile investment.
