If you have car insurance through Liberty Mutual, your regular insurance policy should
cover your rental car
. However, if you don’t have collision or comprehensive coverage on your personal policy, you’ll be responsible for the cost of physical damage to the rental.
You’ve probably heard someone say that buying insurance for a rental car is a “waste of money”—but don’t just turn down the coverage without first checking that your regular
car insurance
will cover you. Here’s what Liberty Mutual policyholders should know about getting car insurance coverage for a rental car.

Does Liberty Mutual offer rental car insurance?

Liberty Mutual does offer rental car insurance—if you have
full coverage car insurance
. In that case, your
collision
and
comprehensive coverage
extend to your rental vehicle.
But what happens if you don’t have a full coverage policy?
Liability insurance
pays for damages you cause to other drivers and their vehicles if you’re at fault in a car accident. So, whether you’re driving your car or a rental, if you cause an accident, the other driver’s damages will be paid for. Unfortunately, you’ll be charged for the rental car damage unless you’ve purchased additional coverage from the rental car agency.

Liberty Mutual rental reimbursement

In addition to covering you if you damage a rental car, Liberty Mutual may also cover the costs of a rental car while your own vehicle is in the shop. If you purchase
rental reimbursement coverage
as part of your full-coverage policy, Liberty Mutual will arrange for and pay the costs of a rental car if you’re in a covered accident. Liberty Mutual partners with Enterprise to allow policyholders to receive a discount just for being a Liberty Mutual customer.
The only catch to this coverage is that you must have your car repaired at a direct Liberty Mutual-approved repair facility, and you have to allow Liberty Mutual to arrange the details of your rental. If you do this, then your rental will be covered for as long as it takes to repair your vehicle.

Is it worth it to get insurance on a rental car?

If you have a full coverage insurance policy, you probably don’t need to purchase additional
rental car insurance
. Even if you don’t have a full coverage policy, if you pay for your rental with a credit card, you may have coverage through your credit card company
If you don’t have car insurance at all, your policy has a high deductible, or your policy doesn’t extend to rental cars, you may benefit from purchasing additional coverage from the rental agency. You may also need to purchase insurance on a rental if you’re renting a commercial vehicle or you’ll be using the rental for business purposes.
If you’re worried you may not have adequate protection while driving a rental, check with your insurance agent or read your
car insurance declaration page
