Should You Get a Lexus Extended Warranty?

You have three options for a Lexus extended warranty—and all of them are worth it if you’ll drive the car past 50,000 miles.

background
The Lexus extended warranty gives you more coverage than the basic four years/50,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper warranty coverage and six years/70,000 miles of powertrain coverage.
  • You can extend your manufacturer warranty anytime before the factory warranty expires.
  • Lexus offers three extended warranties, also called vehicle service agreements (VSA). These may cover repairs for situations that aren’t covered by your
    Lexus car insurance
    .
  • With an extended warranty, you must take your car to an approved Lexus repair shop.
  • Extended warranties are best for people who plan to keep their Lexus for many years.

Overview: What is a Lexus extended warranty?

Every new Lexus comes with a factory warranty, which includes four years/50,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper warranty coverage and six years/70,000 miles of powertrain coverage. This warranty also includes coverage for six years/unlimited miles for corrosion perforation.
If you’d like additional coverage, you can invest in one of three extended warranty options:
  • Extra Care Powertrain
  • Extra Care Gold
  • Extra Care Platinum
Depending on the plan you choose, you’ll get several additional years of coverage as well as some perks (like getting an emergency rental car in qualifying situations). But a major drawback is that you have to use approved repair facilities—and the Lexus factory warranty covers only specific things.
While Lexus is not one of the car warranty companies with the best terms, it’s certainly not the worst warranty provider, either.

Lexus extended warranty plan: Coverage and cost

You can add on any of Lexus’s extended warranty plans before your factory warranty expires. Each includes an additional four years/50,000 miles of coverage on top of the coverage already included in your basic warranty.
There are varying levels of coverage options and costs, so let’s take a look at the Lexus extended warranty plans.

What’s covered

Lexus Extra Care Powertrain, Extra Care Gold, and Extra Care Platinum plans include varying levels of added coverage:
  • Extra Care Powertrain: Basic coverage for essential parts like the engine, transmission, and drive systems
  • Extra Care Gold: Mid-tier coverage for many parts on most vehicle systems
  • Extra Care Platinum: High-level stated-component coverage for most vehicle systems
In other words, the Extra Care Powertrain is a limited warranty in that it does not extend your bumper-to-bumper parts warranty but only extends the powertrain warranty.
The Gold plan extends some of the covered repairs offered by the factory bumper-to-bumper warranty. The Platinum extends most—if not all—of the factory-provided coverage.
These plans also include additional perks for Lexus vehicles, such as
roadside assistance
(which covers towing, battery jumpstarts, lockout service, etc.),
rental coverage reimbursement
, and trip interruption coverage.
Each of the extended warranty plans is transferable from new Lexus vehicles to a second owner for a fee.

What isn’t covered by a Lexus extended warranty

Even the Extra Care Platinum plan will have some exclusions—which is quite common for extended warranty plans across automobile brands and third-party providers.
Here are some typical exclusions:
  • Anything covered by your auto insurance: Non-moving body parts, glass, sheet metal, paint, rust, etc.
  • Anything covered by required maintenance: Batteries, cables, belts, hoses, tires, lights, brake pads and rotors, etc.
  • Anything caused by improper and unreasonable use: Off-roading, drag racing, etc.
  • Modified or custom parts: An aftermarket sound system, etc.
  • Other components: Fabric, upholstery, carpets, dash pad, wiper blades, etc.
Don’t forget, Lexus’s vehicle service contracts require you to visit a Lexus dealer or service center for repairs—so third-party mechanics won’t be covered.

Lexus extended warranty duration

Regardless of the plan you choose, each will add an extra four years or 50,000 miles of coverage onto your standard factory warranty.
An extra perk? You don’t have to add an extended warranty to your Lexus right away. Instead, you have four years or 50,000 miles after the vehicle’s in-service date to opt into extended coverage through your dealership.
Don’t wait until factory warranty expires: Unfortunately, once your factory warranty has expired, you’ll be unable to purchase a Lexus extended warranty.
You can get a Platinum or Gold extended warranty for your used Lexus, too—as long as it is less than 10 model years old and has fewer than 125,000 miles on it. The Powertrain plan can be added to used vehicles that are less than 13 model years old and have fewer than 100,000 miles.
Keep in mind that extended warranties can only be added to used vehicles at the time of sale.

Lexus extended warranty cost

The exact price of your extended warranty is based on a few factors:
  • The vehicle you purchase
  • The level of coverage you select
  • What size deductible you agree to
Ask for an extended warranty quote and check your coverage terms carefully before committing.
The best way to determine the exact cost is to reach out to your local Lexus dealership for a quote. Don’t be afraid to shop around different dealerships while your Lexus is still under its factory warranty!
If you’re shopping for a new Lexus and an extended warranty plan at the same time, you might be able to negotiate a more affordable price.
Option to cancel: If you regret purchasing your extended warranty, there is an option to cancel! You can cancel within 30 days for a $50 fee. If you cancel any time after the 30-day limit, you won’t get a full refund—instead, you’ll get a prorated refund.

Is it worth getting a Lexus extended warranty?

Factor: Reliability ratings of your specific vehicle. To decide if extended warranty coverage is right for you, check the reliability ratings of your specific vehicle. For instance, the 2009 Lexus RX 350 is less reliable than the 2015 ES 350.
In general, Lexus cars rank high for dependability—RepairPal gives them a 4.0 out of 5.0 reliability rating. Your average Lexus will cost $551 per year for
maintenance and repair costs
which are around $100 less than other vehicles in the same class.
Factor: Availability of parts. Since Lexus is a division of Toyota, Lexus parts are generally easy to find and relatively affordable, especially compared to other luxury vehicles. If your vehicle has a (costly) hybrid battery, a hybrid
Lexus battery warranty
may come in especially handy.
Factor:
Length of ownership
. How long do you intend to keep your Lexus? An extended warranty can give you peace of mind if you plan on driving your Lexus up to 100,000 miles or beyond. But if you’re planning on switching up your ride in a couple of years, a Lexus extended warranty may not be worth it.
A possible alternative is
mechanical breakdown insurance (MBI)
, which can often be purchased through your car insurance provider.
MBI helps to cover the cost of mechanical repairs to Lexus models not caused by wear and tear after your vehicle’s factory warranty expires. However, it’s regulated by outside bodies and not purchased through a dealer with a profit incentive.
