Is the Kia Soul a safe car?

Yes, the Kia Soul is a safe car. With four out of five stars from the NHTSA and as a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS, there are limited safety concerns with this boxy SUV. Drivers also have the option to add safety features to their Kia Soul by upgrading their trim level or adding optional packages.

Kia Soul IIHS crash test ratings

The 2022 Kia Soul earned a Top Safety Pick award from IIHS—but wasn’t able to achieve the Top Safety Pick+ rating on account of its headlights
Scrolling through the Soul’s IIHS scorecard, you’ll find a sea of green. The Soul received “good” ratings in almost every category except headlights. The LX, S, GT, X-Line, and EX trims all received a “poor” rating for their headlights.
It was determined that the low beams had inadequate visibility on the straightaway and curves, but they did not exceed glare limits. The high-beam visibility was found inadequate on the left side and curves but fair on the right side. Souls with high-beam assist fared better.
Another area of concern was the IIHS’s “acceptable” ratings for the seat belt and child restraint LATCH ease of use.

Kia Soul NHTSA crash test ratings

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rated the 2022 Kia Soul four out of five stars for overall frontal crash and rollover ratings. For side crashes, the Soul received the full five stars, with the exception of three stars for the side pole.
There have been no recalls for the 2022 Kia Soul, no investigations, and five complaints.

2022 Kia Soul safety features

To access the full power of the 2022 Kia Soul’s safety features, you’ll have to go above the base LX trim—or supplement it with the LX Technology Package. The LX Technology Package includes:
  • Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Driver attention warning
  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Lane-keeping assist
The upper trims include the LX Technology Package’s advanced safety features, but to add adaptive cruise control, you’ll have to swing for the top Turbo trim, which costs an additional $8.5k.

How crash test ratings can affect car insurance

Crash test ratings don’t just have implications for your family’s safety but also affect your insurance rates.
Insurance companies look at your vehicle’s crash test scores and take them into account when setting your annual premium. A car like the Kia Soul, which has fairly good safety ratings, will cost less to insure than one with poorer safety ratings. The safer the car, the less likely you are to submit an expensive car insurance claim—and insurers will reward you for making the safest choice.
Your provider will determine your Kia Soul insurance costs on more than just its safety scores. Your Soul’s overall value will also impact your rates, meaning the higher trims will cost you beyond just their higher starting price. For the best rates, try to strike a balance between initial cost and safety features.
