Overview: what is a Kia extended warranty?

You’re probably aware that your Kia came with a series of factory warranty coverages that were included in your vehicle's original cost. Most automakers include warranties as a way to ensure customers that they’ll cover the cost of repairing certain defects related to the design and manufacturing of your vehicle. The same is true of Kia, whose current warranty plan includes the following coverages and limits:
  • Limited Basic Warranty: 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • Limited Powertrain Warranty: 10 years or 100,000 miles
  • Limited Anti-Perforation Warranty: 5 years or 100,000 miles
  • Roadside Assistance Plan: 5 years or 60,000 miles
An extended warranty, extended coverage on certain repairs beyond the duration of your Kia’s standard warranty coverage. Kia offers three levels of extended warranty protection lasting up to 150,000 miles
You can decide to purchase a Kia extended warranty when you first buy the car, or at any point during the span of its original warranty plan. Kia extended warranties, however, can only be purchased at your local Kia dealership.

Kia Protection Plans: coverage and cost

Kia Protection Plans, administered by Fidelity Warranty Services, are offered at three increasingly comprehensive levels. From least to most coverage, these include:
  • Powertrain Protection Plan: protects your Kia against mechanical breakdowns that are related in some way to the car’s engine, drive-axle, transfer case, and/or transmission
  • Gold Protection Plan: offers the same protections as the Powertrain Plan, while also providing coverage for components in the following systems—steering, brakes, cooling, front/rear suspension, air conditioning, and natural gas
  • Platinum Protection Plan: the highest level of extended warranty coverage offered by Kia, the Platinum Plan covers practically all Kia parts and accessories with a few notable exclusion
Repairs covered under your extended warranty can be performed at any Kia dealership, authorized repair facility, or one of the 6,000 Kia-authorized service centers throughout the U.S. and Canada. These repairs may require drivers to pay a $100 deductible, depending on the terms of your warranty. That said, getting repairs done with an extended warranty can be exponentially more affordable than getting them done without one.
All three of Kia’s Protection Plans also come with a series of additional benefits, including:
  • Alternate Transportation Coverage: offers reimbursement for rental cars, ride-share services, and public transit while your Kia is in the shop
  • Trip Interruption Coverage: offers reimbursement for food and lodging ($100 per day up to $500 per occurrence) when you experience a warranty-covered breakdown more than 100 miles from home
  • Towing Coverage: offers reimbursement for towing expenses (up to $100 for each covered mechanical breakdown)
  • Replacement of Fluids: covers the cost of oils, fluids, greases, lubricants, and AC gasses needed during a covered repair

What’s covered

Deciding which Kia Protection Plan to purchase is going to depend on the amount of coverage you need.
If you’re primarily concerned with getting extra protection for your Kia’s engine, then the Powertrain Protection Plan might be your best choice. It also happens to be the most affordable. The following powertrain components are covered under Kia’s Powertrain Protection Plan:
  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • Transaxle
  • Transfer case
  • Drive axle
  • Additional hybrid/plug-in electric/compressed components
  • NATGAS components
While Kia’s Powertrain Protection Plan offers limited coverage, it can still save you a significant amount of money on repairs relating to your Kia’s engine. For example, according to J.D. Power, the average cost to repair a
Kia Telluride
transmission mount ranges from $203 to $215 when not covered by an extended warranty.
If the Powertrain Protection Plan isn’t enough coverage for your liking, you can always purchase additional coverage with the Gold Protection Plan. Building off of the base set by the PPP, Kia’s Gold Plan offers additional warranty coverage on the following parts and components:
  • Steering
  • Brakes
  • Cooling system
  • Front and rear suspension
  • Air conditioning systems
  • Electrical systems and components
Finally, for the most coverage possible, you can purchase Kia’s Platinum Protection Plan, which covers almost every system, component, and accessory on your Kia, save for a few exceptions which we’ve listed in the next section. You can think of the Platinum Plan as a sort of super-bumper-to-bumper warranty.

What isn’t covered

Even with Kia’s Platinum Protection Plan, you won’t be protected against everything under the sun. Here’s everything that your Kia Protection Plan won’t cover, regardless of the plan you choose:
  • Things covered by your auto insurance: E.g. non-moving body parts, glass, sheet metal, paint, rust, upholstery, etc.
  • Things covered by
    regular maintenance:
E.g. batteries, cables, belts, hoses, tires, lights, brake linings, brake pads and rotors, disc brake pads, tires, wheels
  • Anything caused by improper and unreasonable use: E.g. off-roading, drag racing, etc.
  • Modified
or custom parts: E.g. an aftermarket sound system
  • Other components: airbags, solar-powered devices, weather stripping, lock cylinders, heater and radiator hoses, exhaust system, catalytic converter, shock absorbers, safety restraint systems, or vinyl and convertible tops
For some of these components, Kia does, however, offer the following appearance and road hazard protection plans:
  • Ding Shield Plus: offers unlimited repairs of dings and dents up to the size of a credit card
  • Ding Shield Ultimate: offers repair coverage for minor windshield chips and nicks as well as headlight brightening and unlimited repair of minor interior rips, holes, burns, punctures and scratches up to two inches long
  • Ding Shield Alloy Wheel Repair: offers repair coverage for aluminum or painted wheels damaged by scuffs, scrapes, scratches or rash
  • Road Hazard Deluxe: repairs or replaces tires damaged by road hazards such as potholes, cracks and debris
  • Road Hazard Premium: offers protection against cosmetic damage to alloy and steel factory wheels

Duration

Your Kia extended warranty’s duration is more or less up to you. You will be able to mix and match your coverage needs with your Kia dealership to extend your warranty from 60,000 miles up to 150,000 miles

Cost

The exact price of your Kia Protection Plan is going to vary based on the level of coverage you choose, your location, the Kia model you drive, its mileage at the time you purchase the extended warranty, and the length of your warranty coverage. On average, Kia drivers paid around $3,940 for a 100,000-mile Platinum Protection Plan extended warranty with a $100 deductible.
If you need more coverage for a longer span of time, or if your Kia is already at the end of its original warranty plan, you should expect to pay more for your Protection Plan than you would for a newer Kia and a shorter, less comprehensive Protection Plan.
The standard deductible for a Kia extended warranty—that is, the amount you agree to pay out of pocket for any covered repairs—is $100, but other deductible options range from $200 to $0. The higher your deductible, the lower the overall warranty cost.

Is it worth getting a Kia extended warranty?

Whether or not you need an extended warranty is going to ultimately be a matter of personal preference. A Kia extended warranty comes with some pros and cons that you may want to consider before investing.
  • Pro: Kia’s Protection Plans have a longer-than-average duration compared to other automakers. For example, GMC’s extended warranty only offers a maximum extended warranty duration of 5 years or 60,000 miles compared to the 150,000 miles you get with a Kia plan.
  • Con: Under warranty, you’ll be limited to certain service centers that are Kia approved for your repairs, which may be inconvenient.
  • Pro: You’ll get plenty of coverage with Kia’s Protection Plans, especially if you opt for a more comprehensive package like the Platinum Plan.
  • Con: Extended warranty plans like Kia’s Protection Plan can be expensive, especially if your Kia doesn’t need to be repaired often enough to justify the price of the coverage.
If you do choose to forgo a Kia extended warranty, you may want to cover your bases by investing in
mechanical breakdown insurance (MBI)
. Similar to an extended warranty, MBI covers the cost of certain mechanical repairs—so long as they are not the result of regular wear and tear—even after your vehicle’s factory warranty has expired.
