background
The Kia certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty adds 1-year/12,000-miles of platinum coverage from the time of purchase to Kia’s already impressive 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty.
Kia already offers an impressive10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty on all of its vehicles, so it should come as no surprise that the manufacturer doesn’t offer much extra warranty on its certified pre-owned vehicles. As such, you’ll need to invest in one of Kia’s extended protection plans if you want more robust warranty coverage for your CPO Kia.
Of course, you may just need a killer

Kia certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty coverage

The Kia certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty includes the 10-year/100,000-mile factory powertrain warranty coverage, as well as additional coverage for up to one year or 12,000 miles after the new owner’s time of purchase.
That is not a lot of additional coverage compared to plans offered by Kia’s competitors, like
Nissan’s seven-year CPO warranty
. However, Kia has one of the most competitive factory warranty packages in the U.S. market. While the one-year/12,000-mile Kia CPO warranty replaces any remaining coverage from the 5-year/60,000-mile Kia limited bumper-to-bumper warranty, all drivers of a Kia CPO vehicle will still be able to utilize any remaining time from Kia’s 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty.
Kia CPO customers also have the option to add up to 150,000 miles of coverage from one of
Kia’s three extended warranty protection plans
:
  • Powertrain Coverage
  • Gold Coverage
  • Platinum Coverage
But do you need to purchase extended warranty protection if the included coverage covers all of your certified pre-owned vehicle concerns? Here’s what is (and isn’t) included in Kia’s 1-year/12,000-mile CPO warranty.

What’s covered

The Kia CPO warranty provides all the coverage of the Platinum Kia Protection Plan. This plan provides exclusionary coverage, meaning it covers everything in your vehicle except the exclusions listed in your agreement details.

What isn’t covered

Here’s the general gist of what is excluded under the Kia CPO Platinum coverage warranty:
  • Components that are subject to natural wear and tear (brake pads, linings, rotors, disks, plates, bearings, hoses, filters, shock absorbers, suspension parts, etc.)
  • Exterior and interior body components (panels, trim, moldings, glass, lenses, weather stripping, locks, lights, paint, etc.)
  • Airbags
  • Solar-powered devices
  • Tires and wheels
  • Certain batteries not listed under Kia’s inclusionary Gold Protection Plan
  • Exhaust systems
  • Catalytic converter
  • Safety restraints
  • Tires and wheel alignment
  • Aftermarket installations
That may seem like a lot, but remember that warranties are intended to cover defects that should have been prevented by the manufacturer. Things like regularly scheduled maintenance, wear and tear, misuse, or modifications will not be covered under most warranties—not just Kia’s CPO warranty.

Additional benefits

In addition to one year/12,000 miles of Kia’s Platinum coverage, every certified pre-owned Kia includes the following:
  • 10 years of 24/7 roadside assistance with unlimited miles: Includes services for flat tires, gasoline delivery, lockouts, and jump starts
  • Emergency towing coverage: Reimbursement of up to $75 for emergency towing for a covered mechanical breakdown
  • Rental car allowance: Provides reimbursement of up to $35/day for 10 days for alternative transportation while your Kia is being serviced for a warrantable repair
  • Travel breakdown protection: Allows $100 per diem of up to $500 if your Kia breaks down with a warrantable repair while over 100 miles from your home
If that wasn’t enough, your certified pre-owned Kia also comes with 90 days of SiriusXM, effective from your date of purchase!

Is a Kia CPO warranty transferable?

Yes! The Kia CPO warranty is 100% transferable if you choose to sell your pre-owned Kia to a new owner within one year of your purchase. You’ll just need to pay a one-time $40 fee.

Kia CPO program certification process

A year of Platinum protection and a few added perks aren’t the only benefits of buying a certified pre-owned vehicle from Kia. Every Kia CPO goes through an intensive 165-point inspection for quality insurance, covering everything from the air conditioning to the engine systems.
Any faults or concerns during the inspection and test drive are repaired by authorized technicians with authentic Kia parts. Any used Kia that is not able to pass the inspection won’t be sold as a certified pre-owned vehicle. Kia CPOs are also limited to models from the previous five model years with 60,000 miles or less on the odometer, and all owners receive a copy of their Kia’s vehicle history report for maximum assurance.
By buying a Kia that’s gone through this extensive CPO inspection process, you can be certain that you’re not buying a
lemon
. Not to mention, you’ll get to reap all the previously covered benefits of Kia’s CPO program!

Are Kias reliable?

The Kia CPO warranty may seem incredibly short compared to Kia’s factory warranty package, but that could be in part because Kias have a reputation for fantastic reliability! RepairPal gives Kia an excellent 4.0/5.0 reliability rating and ranks it 3rd out of 32 car brands
Does that mean that every Kia will automatically carry the torch? Take a look at the reputation of two of Kia’s most popular models to get an idea of how individual models fare.

Average Kia repair costs

The average annual repair cost for Kia is just $474 according to RepairPal’s estimates. That number could be even lower with a Kia CPO warranty on your side.
Kia hasn’t always had a stellar reputation for reliability. While much has changed, it still has its fair share of
common problems
like transmission defects and engine failure. A Kia transmission service bill could cost $2,300 or more—but not if it's a serviceable repair that’s covered under your CPO warranty.

Our take: is a Kia CPO warranty worth it?

A Kia CPO warranty may not offer the most lasting coverage out there, but buying a CPO is definitely worth it if you want some strong guarantees about the quality of your used Kia.
You’ll likely pay more for a Kia CPO than an uncertified used Kia, so it really comes down to whether or not these guarantees are worth it for you. You’re already buying an exceptionally reliable vehicle if you’re buying a used Kia from the last five years, but that doesn’t eliminate the risk of buying a faulty one. Only the CPO inspection process will do that, so it may be worth it for the additional peace of mind.

How to save on Kia insurance costs

Whether it’s 12,000 miles or unlimited miles, a CPO warranty will only get you so far. That’s why it’s so important to pair your Kia CPO warranty with a solid insurance policy, to pick up on repairs and services where the warranty coverage leaves off. But
