How to find the cheapest car insurance quotes in Louisville

Louisville is the most populous city in Kentucky, housing over 600,000 residents. When it comes to tourism, “Bourbon City” is in the heavyweight league—not only is it the home of Muhammad Ali and the famous Kentucky Derby, it also has a vibrant architectural, cultural, and historical scene.

Jockeys aren’t the only drivers who live in the fast lane in Louisville. Thanks to high congestion and fatality rates, residents pay an average of $1,743 per year for minimum insurance coverage and $3,183 per year for full coverage. That’s 33% higher than the state average and 69% higher than the national average rates.

If you’re looking for affordable car insurance, try comparing quotes. Jerry makes it easy by automatically collecting and comparing rates from over 55 top providers on your smartphone—no phone calls or paperwork needed. Best of all, the quotes are free.

Best car insurance companies in Louisville

The best car insurance companies in Louisville have different strengths and weaknesses. For example, Kentucky drivers said that Clearcover scored the best overall and offered the lowest prices. But they also said Progressive had the best customer service and Liberty Mutual provided the best claims experience.

Jerry gathered these recommendations during its national shopping survey, which surveyed over 15,000 verified policyholders in 50 states. If affordability is your number one concern, we also have that data—check out the table below for the five cheapest providers in Louisville.

Insurance companyMonthly minimum coverage costMonthly full coverage costJerry user rating
Travelers$41$1644.5
Nationwide$61$2354.2
Safeco$87$2054.4
National General$89$1784.3
Esurance$90$2274.1

As for large providers like GEICO, State Farm, and USAA, they received middling scores.

How’d we get these scores?

Jerry’s experts conducted one of the largest car insurance surveys in the United States. We surveyed 15,000 policyholders, in all 50 states, over the span of 18 months. These policyholders hold insurance policies with 87 different insurance companies. We surveyed policyholders to gauge their satisfaction with their insurance carriers in: policy cost, customer service, buying and renewal experience, as well as claim experience. These scores were all reported by real customers of the insurance companies.

Best cheap auto insurance quotes in Louisville

When it comes to car insurance, “best” and “cheap” don’t always go hand-in-hand. The cheapest car insurance follows Kentucky’s car insurance laws, but the best coverage for your situation might involve some extra coverage options, like roadside assistance or uninsured motorist/underinsured motorist coverage (UM/UIM).

At Jerry, our insurance agents generally recommend carrying at least 100k/300k/100k liability insurance and full coverage.

Cheap minimum liability insurance quotes in Louisville

Kentucky’s minimum car insurance requirements mandate liability insurance and personal injury protection (PIP).

Liability insurance pays the other driver’s medical expenses and car repair or replacement costs if you were to blame for the accident. PIP pays to treat your and your passengers’ injuries regardless of fault.

The minimum liability insurance required follows a 25/50/10 rule, which provides:

Alternatively, you can also opt for a policy with a single, combined liability coverage limit of $60,000.1 But because Kentucky is a so-called “choice no-fault state,” it’s possible to reject the PIP coverage—and the limitations on your right to sue—in writing using the Kentucky No-Fault Rejection Form.

Louisville drivers pay an average of $1,743 per year (or $145 per month) for the minimum coverage listed above.

While Kentucky’s car insurance laws aren’t predicted to change, a few new rules took place on January 1st, 2024. EV owners are now required to pay $120 per year, while hybrid or electric motorcycle owners must pay $60. Plus, Kentucky’s special military license plates are now available to motorcyclists.2

Do you need more than minimum coverage in Louisville?

Louisville drivers probably need more than the minimum liability and PIP coverage. $10,000 of property damage liability coverage is often not enough compared to the cost of most new vehicles. And if you or your loved ones get into a serious car accident, $10,000 of PIP coverage won’t go far in paying for their medical bills.

The bottom line: Raise your liability limits to 50/100/50—or better yet, 100/300/100—if you can, and your PIP coverage limits as high as you can afford.

What the experts say

A general rule that I recommend is to carry enough coverage to protect your current and future assets – at least $100,000/$300,000 of liability coverage is recommended, but you may need more coverage depending on your financial situation.

Cheap full coverage car insurance quotes in Louisville

A full-coverage car insurance policy is the only way to protect yourself from costs associated with repairing or replacing your vehicle.

  • Collision coverage protects your vehicle in the event of a collision, regardless of fault. If your car is damaged in an accident, collision coverage helps cover repair or replacement costs up to the vehicle’s actual cash value.
  • Comprehensive coverage covers damage to your vehicle not caused by a collision. It typically includes theft, vandalism, fire, natural disasters, falling objects, and certain types of animal-related damage.

If you’ve leased or financed your car, you may have already agreed to carry a full coverage car insurance policy. Most dealerships and banks mandate collision, comprehensive, and gap insurance in their financial contracts.3

Average cost of car insurance in Louisville

The average cost of car insurance in Louisville is $145 per year for minimum insurance coverage and $265 per year for full coverage. For comparison, Kentucky car insurance costs 33% less. The national average rate is a whopping 69% smaller.

The reasons why car insurance is so expensive in Louisville are:

  • Bad drivers cause more accidents: To find the American cities with the worst drivers, Consumer Affairs weighed the number of car accidents and fatalities against bad driving behaviors like driving under the influence and speeding. Louisville ranked 57th out of 323 cities.4
  • Extreme weather drives up claims: While Jefferson County has an average number of natural disasters each year, floods, storms, and tornadoes wreak a lot of property damage.5
  • Motor vehicle fatalities make it risky to drive: Kentucky has an above-average number of motor vehicle crash deaths per 100,000 people.6
  • Motor vehicle thefts make it risky to park: Kentucky’s rate of motor vehicle thefts is declining, but it’s still much higher than it was a decade ago. The Louisville Metro Police Department reported 214 vehicles stolen per 100,000 people in 2022 versus 153 in 2012.7
  • Traffic drives up car accident rates: Louisville takes the 730th place for most congested city… worldwide. Drivers lose 11 hours to congestion every year.8

Average cost of car insurance in Louisville by ZIP code

The average insurance rate can help you predict your insurance costs, but it’s mostly inaccurate. Each driver’s auto insurance rates are calculated using a range of factors, from vehicle type to ZIP code.

The lowest rate you can find in Louisville partly depends on where you live. The cheapest ZIP code is 40209, with an average annual cost of $1,051.Here are the five most expensive places to insure your car in Louisville:

ZIP CodeMonthly minimum coverage cost
40215$211
40212$223
40211$243
40210$246
40202$289

Car insurance quotes in Louisville by rating factors

Insurance companies in Louisville use many rating factors when calculating your auto insurance premiums:

  • Age: Drivers under 25 pay higher insurance rates due to their limited driving experience.
  • Driving history: Insurers will charge more if you have at-fault accidents or traffic tickets on your driving record or in your claims history.
  • Parking spot: Rates are likely higher if you regularly park in a neighborhood with a higher incidence of auto insurance claims.
  • Usage: Insurers often charge more if you drive your vehicle to and from work than if you use it for leisure.
  • Vehicle: Collision and comprehensive coverage are more costly for luxury, high-performance, and sports cars.

Cheap car insurance quotes in Louisville after driving violations

Your Kentucky driving record impacts your auto insurance quotes. If insurance providers see a history of violations, they may consider you a high-risk driver and charge steeper rates.

Some common violations that can raise your insurance rates include:

  • An at-fault car accident
  • Careless driving
  • Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
  • Driving with a suspended license
  • Driving without insurance
  • Reckless driving
  • Speeding

Cheapest car insurance in Louisville after speeding ticket

In Kentucky, a speeding ticket can increase your car insurance rates by an average of 33%.

Louisville car insurance prices are even worse. For example, the average annual insurance rate after a speeding ticket in the Bluegrass State is $2,527, but the cost nearly doubles to $4,111 if you live in the city.

But that’s just the average. You can cut costs by using Jerry to find cheap quotes after a speeding ticket.

Cheap car insurance quotes in Louisville by age

Generally speaking, the golden bracket for low car insurance costs is for those between the ages of 25 and 75.9 Whether you’re a teen or a senior driver who falls outside these bounds, here’s how to make the most of your age.

Cheapest car insurance in Louisville for young drivers

The leading cause of death among teens is motor vehicle crashes. They’re also more likely to engage in risky behaviors like speeding, forgetting their seat belts, or driving under the influence.10 As a result, car insurance for teen drivers costs almost three times as much as a 55-year-old driver for the same coverage in 2023.11

A full-coverage car insurance policy provides the best financial protection for a new driver who’s just beginning to learn the rules of the road. Staying on a parent or guardian’s policy is another great way to keep costs low.

Cheapest car insurance in Louisville for senior drivers

As hearing, vision, and reaction time decline, drivers over the age of 70 become more likely to get into a car accident. They’re also more likely to suffer serious injuries.12

Look for discounts for retirees and a low annual mileage if you’d like affordable car insurance for senior drivers.

Cheap car insurance quotes in Louisville based on insurance history

Your insurance history tells providers how long you’ve been insured, whether you’re currently insured or not, and whether you have any car insurance lapses. Insurers treat it as an important indicator of costly behaviors like skipping payments and driving uninsured.13

Cheap car insurance quotes in Louisville for drivers with poor credit

Insurers use your credit rating to evaluate your likelihood of making an insurance claim. The lower your credit score, the higher your insurance premiums.

On average, American drivers with fair credit (710-740) pay 49% more for car insurance coverage than drivers with excellent credit (823+). Unfortunately, drivers with poor credit (524-577) pay 44% more than the former and 115% more than the latter.14

Have a look at how much your credit score can affect your insurance costs.

How to lower car insurance costs in Louisville

1. Shop around and compare quotes

Whenever you go shopping for car insurance, it’s important to compare personalized quotes from at least three different providers. Personalized quotes give you the most accurate idea of what your costs will be, while comparison shopping tells you whether you’ve got a competitive rate or not.

2. Hunt for car insurance discounts

Every provider offers car insurance discounts, but their eligibility and savings amounts vary. Here are a few common savings programs to look for:

  • Good driver discounts: Get insurance discounts for drivers with one or fewer points on their license who have continuously held a license for three years with no at-fault accidents responsible for injury or death.
  • Good student discounts: Are you a full-time student in either high school or college? Do you have a B average or better? You probably qualify for a discount from your insurance company.
  • Telematics discounts: Many companies offer easy-to-win discounts to drivers who use telematics to track their driving habits. You might even get a discount just for signing up!

If you need more than one insurance product, look for bundling discounts. You could save up to 25% on the right home and auto insurance bundle!

3. Increase your deductible for comprehensive and collision coverage

Choosing a higher deductible is an easy way to cut your monthly premiums while maintaining full coverage. You could save anywhere from 7 to 28 percent every year—just don’t commit to paying more than your finances can handle.15
