What Does the Jeep CPO Warranty Cover?

A Jeep CPO warranty provides three extra months of basic warranty coverage and two extra years of powertrain coverage. But is it worth the price?

A Jeep certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty includes three extra months of bumper-to-bumper coverage and two extra years of powertrain coverage in addition to any remaining coverage from the Jeep’s initial factory warranties.
Jeeps are well-known for being some of the most versatile vehicles anywhere on (or off) the road. In addition to their natural durability, Jeeps also come protected by two basic factory warranties: one for full bumper-to-bumper coverage and another for powertrain issues.
If you don’t want to pay full price for a brand-new Jeep, you can still get some peace of mind when you purchase a used one—so long as it is an officially certified pre-owned Jeep. CPO Jeeps are protected by the Jeep CPO warranty, which extends the basic warranties for a short time.
Keep in mind that CPO Jeeps tend to be more expensive than other used Jeeps, so it’s important to consider if the added protection is worth the extra expense. That’s why

Jeep certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty coverage

The Jeep certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty is a protection plan that pays for certain repairs in used Jeep vehicles that pass a rigorous certification process. When this protection starts, how long it lasts, and what it covers depends on the type of warranty in question.
New Jeeps come standard with two factory warranties: the basic (or “bumper-to-bumper”) warranty and the powertrain warranty.
The factory basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. The powertrain warranty lasts for five years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Both of these warranties begin on the day the Jeep is initially purchased.
Used Jeeps—if they pass certification—come with the CPO warranty. This coverage extends both the factory basic and the factory powertrain warranties.
For CPOs, the bumper-to-bumper coverage is extended by three months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first. This extension goes into effect whenever the used Jeep is purchased. If the original bumper-to-bumper warranty is still in effect, the CPO warranty kicks in whenever the original one runs out.
The powertrain warranty is extended more. It increases the total powertrain coverage to 7 years or 100,000 miles. However, that warranty term is still from the point of the initial sale. So, if you buy a CPO Jeep that’s already five years old, you still only get two more years of powertrain coverage.
The warranties can help pay for expensive repairs to your Jeep—as long as those repairs happen within the allotted time frame and meet certain qualifications. Even if a repair is covered by your warranty, you’ll still have to pay a deductible. How much you’ll have to pay out of pocket varies from one Jeep service center to the next, but generally it’s around $100

What’s covered

Jeep’s CPO warranty is fairly comprehensive in regard to the systems and components it covers. It will pay for repairs and/or replacements that are required for 5,000 different standard factory-installed components.
This includes just about everything—such as brakes, onboard computers, electrical systems, suspension, climate control, seating and upholstery, and much more.
The powertrain portion of the CPO warranty, as the name suggests, offers additional protection for powertrain components. This includes things like the engine, driveline, and transmission.

What isn’t covered

The coverage provided by the CPO warranty may be extensive in terms of which components it covers, but it’s more restrictive in regard to whattypes of damage it will pay for.
In other words, it doesn’t matter much what part of your car has been damaged, but it does matter how it got damaged. The Jeep CPO warranty will not cover any of the following situations:
  • Damages that result from a collision or traffic accident
  • Damages that result from improper vehicle care, neglect, or abuse
  • Damages resulting from or related to aftermarket modifications
  • Routine maintenance
The idea of a warranty is to pay for damages that may result from improper vehicle assembly, faulty components, or manufacturing workmanship errors. If you want your Jeep to be protected from other types of damage, you’ll need good car insurance

Additional benefits

Reduced repair costs and defective part replacements aren’t the only benefits of a Jeep CPO warranty. There are other perks, such as the following:
  • Car rental allowance. If your Jeep needs warranty-covered repairs and will be in the shop overnight, you’ll be given a $35/day stipend to rent a temporary replacement vehicle.
  • Roadside assistance. CPO Jeeps come with 12 months of complimentary roadside assistance service.
  • SiriusXM Radio. Along with your CPO Jeep, you’ll get three free months of subscription to SiriusXM Radio.
  • CARFAX Buyback. After you purchase a CPO Jeep, if it is discovered that the CARFAX vehicle history report did not show an important piece of information (such as a salvage title or significant body damage), CARFAX will buy your Jeep back from you.

Is a Jeep CPO warranty transferable?

If you decide to sell your CPO Jeep, its CPO warrantyisfully transferable. However, you’ll need to pay a $50 fee to have it transferred to the new owner.

Jeep CPO program certification process

Jeep doesn’t slap its official pre-owned certification on just any old vehicle—the requirements for certification are actually quite stringent.
First, the used vehicle must meet all the CPO program prerequisites, and then it must undergo exhaustive testing—which is conducted by the automotive experts at
Mopar
. Here’s what’s required for a Jeep to pass inspection:
  • The Jeep must be no older than 5 years
  • The Jeep must have no more than 75,000 miles on the odometer
  • The Jeep’s frame must be entirely damage-free
  • The Jeep must have a clean title
  • The Jeep must pass an intensive 125-point inspection process to determine the status of each of its systems and components
  • The Jeep must pass a rigorous road test to ensure its handling and drivability are up to par

Are Jeeps reliable?

Jeep’s overall reliability rating is 3.5 out of 5. It ranks #15 in reliability out of 33 car brands. The average annual repair cost for a Jeep is $635, which is about the average annual repair cost across all makes and models.
Looking at the statistics and hard numbers, Jeep comes out looking extraordinarily average in every reliability category.

Our take: is a Jeep CPO warranty worth it?

The simple answer is no—the Jeep CPO is probably not going to be worth it. As mentioned above, Jeeps require a very average amount of maintenance and repairs. Often, the repairs required result from the vigorous use and off-road driving that the vehicles are put through—which makes them the type of repairs that your warranty wouldn’t cover anyway.
The real issue with the Jeep CPO warranty (apart from the slightly unreasonable $100 deductible) is its incredibly short term length. Most decent CPO warranties include three to five years of bumper-to-bumper coverage. The idea that three months is an adequate amount of time for a warranty doesn’t quite check out.
True, the powertrain portion of the CPO warranty is noticeably longer than most CPO coverage—but that only covers very specific components and does not even begin when you purchase your used Jeep.
So if you’re going to purchase a CPO Jeep, it ought to be for the reassurance that comes from knowing your vehicle has passed the intensive certification process. The warranty that comes with won’t provide much additional peace of mind. For quality warranty coverage, you’ll need to look into purchasing extended warranty coverage
