Overview: What is a Hyundai extended warranty?

is usually included in the cost of a new vehicle. The warranty provides assurance that the automaker will cover the cost of repairing defects in your car in the first years of its life. Each manufacturer’s standard warranty covers different services, lengths of time, and miles. 
Hyundai has one of the best factory warranties out there, including:
  • 10-year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty
  • 5-year/60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty
  • 7-year/unlimited miles Anti-Perforation Warranty
  • 5-year/unlimited miles 24-Hour Roadside Assistance  
The warranties also include Parts, Accessories, and Emissions coverage and a 10-year/100,000-mile Hybrid/Electric Battery and Hybrid System Components Warranty. Hyundai’s Limited Powertrain Warranty is the longest in the industry. 
On the other hand, an extended warranty 10 years or 100,000 miles and are known at Hyundai as “vehicle service contracts.” 
If you’re interested in a Hyundai extended warranty, you’ll need to purchase it before your factory warranty has less than 1,000 miles left on it. Once you purchase it, you can cancel anytime in the first 60 days for a full refund.

Hyundai Protection Plan Vehicle Service Contract: Coverage and cost

Hyundai’s extended warranty, the Hyundai Protection Plan Vehicle Service Contract, comes with three levels of protection. From least to most coverage, they include: 
  • Powertrain: This base coverage includes your Hyundai’s engine, transmission, and drive axle. 
  • Gold: This includes everything from the Powertrain plan, plus components like your Hyundai’s climate control system. 
  • Platinum: The highest plan includes high-tech electronics and your Hyundai’s navigation system. 
You can upgrade your Hyundai factory warranty to one of these Protection Plans at any Hyundai dealership in the US. Some repairs require a small deductible, but overall, your extended warranty will provide a huge relief from those pricey repair bills.

Hyundai extended warranty limitations

Even though Hyundai has one of the most robust warranty programs, its extended warranty is still subject to the following limitations: 
  • Designated repair shops: If you’re using your vehicle service contract from Hyundai, you can’t take your car just anywhere for repairs. You’ll have to take it to a Hyundai dealership or one of their approved repair shops. 
  • Limited time frame: You can only add your extended warranty with at least one month and 1,000 miles left on your New Vehicle Limited Warranty—otherwise, you’re out of luck! 
  • Interest charges: If you add your extended warranty contract to your regular monthly payment, you’ll have to pay the interest included in your new car financing.

Duration

Whether you opt for a Powertrain, Gold, or Powertrain vehicle service contract, they all come with the same coverage term of 10 years or 100,000 miles. The same applies to the Original Lessee/Owner Vehicle Service Contracts and Certified Pre-Owned Wrap.

Cost

In order to get an exact quote for one of Hyundai’s extended warranties, you’ll need to contact your dealer or go through a third-party provider. The cost will vary depending on your vehicle and which plan you select—but they generally range between $350 and $750 per year. 
In addition to the annual fee, you’ll also need to take into account the cost of your deductible, which will vary based on the service. You can also preselect your deductible in advance with your Hyundai dealership. 

Is it worth getting a Hyundai extended warranty?

There are a lot of factors to consider when deciding if an extended warranty is worth it for you. Given that Hyundai is known for its reliability, receiving an above-average reliability rating from J.D. Power, what is the likelihood that you’ll need to use your vehicle service contract? 
RepairPal estimates that a Hyundai's average annual repair and maintenance costs are $468. Depending on which extended warranty plan you select (ranging from $350 to $750), you could end up paying less or more with the extended warranty.
It’s also worth considering that the Powertrain, Gold, and Platinum plans all include different parts, so whether or not the warranty is worth it depends on which parts are most likely to break down. The answer there will depend on which Hyundai model you are driving. 
An alternative to the Hyundai extended warranty is
mechanical breakdown insurance
(MBI), which is available through many insurance companies. Similar to an extended warranty, MBI will help cover the cost of mechanical repairs that have not been caused by wear and tear after your Hyundai factory warranty expires. The primary difference is that MBI is regulated by outside bodies rather than a dealer with a profit incentive.
