How to check your Infiniti’s VIN

The most common place to look for your Infiniti’s VIN is on the driver’s side dashboard. Take a look through the windshield to find it easily. If you have trouble reading this VIN plate, look for a sticker on your driver’s side door jamb as a backup.
You can also find your VIN on two documents—your insurance cards and your DMV-issued registration cards

How to decode an Infiniti VIN

VINs have been around since the ‘50s, but they weren’t standardized by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) until 1981. Any vehicle manufactured worldwide since then has been assigned a 17-digit code, regardless of its make, model, or the continent it’s from.
If your vehicle was made before 1981, it may still have a VIN—but it could contain a different amount of numbers, as well as a different meaning.
Modern VINs are made up of a combination of numerical digits 0-9, as well as 23 letters of the English alphabet. (Letters I, O, and Q are excluded because they look too similar to 1, 0, and 9.)

Positions 1-3: world manufacturer identifier

The first three positions of any VIN comprise the world manufacturer identifier (WMI). The WMI will tell you where the car was made, its manufacturer, and the type of vehicle.
Most Infinitis are manufactured in Japan, so the first position is usually J. However, sometimes an Infiniti is manufactured in the USA, making the first position 5
The second position will always contain the letter N, which represents Infiniti. As for the third position, it might contain K, R, X, or 3, depending on whether it's a passenger or multi-purpose vehicle.

Positions 4: engine type

For an Infiniti, the fourth position of the VIN will always be a letter denoting engine type. Currently, 12 different letters are used to denote 12 different Infiniti engines

Positions 5: model line

Similarly, the fifth position will tell you about your Infiniti model. Once again, this will always be a letter that corresponds with a particular line.

Position 6: model specifics

Because each model line contains multiple trims, this position will offer you additional clarification as to the exact model of your Infiniti. This position will be a number 0-9

Position 7: body type

This position can contain any of the following numbers to describe your Infiniti’s body type:
  • 1: Four-door sedan
  • 4: Two-door coupe
  • 5: Four-door wagon
  • 6: Two-door convertible
  • 8: Wagon

Position 8: miscellaneous equipment information

Here, you’ll find additional miscellaneous information about your Infiniti. For example, a Y means that your car has four-wheel drive, while A, C, D, and E represent different airbag systems

Position 9: check digit

The digit in this position is used by the Department of Transportation to confirm that your VIN is genuine.
