Why do I need a Honda Accord radio code?

We are used to our radios working automatically every time we start our cars. If you’re someone who relies religiously on your stereo to help lighten the morning commute mood, seeing a flashing “code” message can become an instant pain. You’re probably wondering what that message means and how you can get around it to access your regularly-scheduled music programming.
If your car battery has recently died or you have installed a new one, you’ll need your radio code before you can use the sound system again. Radio codes are a security measure that helps deter stereo theft (which is great news if you don’t have
sound system insurance
)—but they can be a hassle to figure out when you need them on hand.
Luckily, finding the radio code for your Honda Accord is pretty simple. Below, we’ll outline the steps you should take to locate yours.

How to find your Honda Accord radio code

You can usually get your radio back in working order without actually using the code. Simply press and hold the radio’s power button for two seconds, and your sound system should automatically reset. Easy!
If that doesn’t work, though, you’ll need the code.
In a Honda Accord, that code is typically located in one of two locations: either on a sticker inside your glove box or in your owner’s manual

Keep your eyes peeled for labeling like “Anti-Theft Radio Code” or something similar, and make sure you don’t confuse your radio’s serial number with its code—in this case, you’re looking for a 5-digit code. Anything longer than that is likely for something else.

How to look up your Honda Accord radio code

If you can’t find your owner’s manual and or the sticker inside your glove compartment, you’ll have to look up the radio code manually
You can do so online—you’ll need a few critical pieces of information before getting started.  Namely, you’ll need to know your
vehicle identification number (VIN)
and your radio’s serial number to get the radio code.
There are tons of records with your VIN—check your insurance or registration cards first. Finding the radio serial number, on the other hand, is a little more challenging:
  • For Honda Accords year 2002 and newer: Press and hold down radio preset numbers one and six simultaneously, while turning your key to the ON position. After a few seconds, a 10-digit serial number should pop up on the display.
  • For Honda Accords year 2001 or older: In older models, the serial number is physically printed on the back of your radio unit—and you’ll need to remove the radio to access it.
Once you’ve got both numbers down, you can use Honda’s
online search tool
to crack your radio’s code, or, if you’d prefer to get the code straight from the mouth of a Honda rep, you can call 1-800-999-1009
Of course, you can save yourself the hassle and take your vehicle to a local Honda dealership. The technicians there will have the information you need to track down the ever-elusive radio code.
