Ford certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty coverage

Ford offers two tiers of certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty coverage:
  • Ford’s Gold Advantage plan—offers up to 1 year or 12,000 miles of comprehensive warranty coverage and up to 7 years or 100,000 miles of powertrain coverage
  • Ford’s Blue Advantage plan offers 90 days and/or 4,000 miles of comprehensive limited warranty.
A Ford can qualify as certified pre-owned so long as it is under 6 years old and has less than 80,000 miles on its odometer. If you happen to find yourself a certified pre-owned Ford that is, say, two years old with 20,000 miles logged, that means you would get the remaining year and/or 16,000 miles of factory warranty coverage before your certified pre-owned warranty kicks in. That same two year old Ford would be entitled to the three years and/or 40,000 miles remaining on the factory powertrain warranty, before your certified pre-owned warranty even starts.
If a certified pre-owned Ford catches your eye and it is, for argument's sake, four years old, the comprehensive portion of your warranty would kick in on the date of purchase, as the original comprehensive warranty would have run out. However, you would still be entitled to the Ford’s factory powertrain warranty, which would still have roughly a year remaining on, before your certified pre-owned powertrain warranty kicks in (so long as you have Ford’s Gold plan).
Both Gold and Blue plans offer a 14 day/1,000 mile Money Back Guarantee.
All repairs covered under a Ford certified pre-owned warranty will require a $100 deductible for any service rendered.

Is a Ford CPO warranty transferable?

Yes, a Ford certified pre-owned warranty is fully transferable and any remaining coverage will be applied to the new owner.

Ford CPO program certification process

Not any run-of-the-mill used Ford vehicle can be classified as certified pre-owned. First off, a used Ford can only be under 6 years old with less than 80,000 miles to be considered certified pre-owned. Also, any Ford considered for either the Gold Advantage or Blue Advantage plan must go through the following rigorous inspection:
  • Gold Advantage: 172-point inspection
  • Blue Advantage: 139-point inspection
Ford technicians will repair any faulty parts or components. They will also replace any aftermarket parts with authentic Ford parts. Any Ford being considered for either the Gold or Blue Advantage plans will have their vehicle history report pulled, their maintenance record double-checked, and the car taken for a road test before it can be classified as certified pre-owned.

Are Fords reliable?

Ultimately, this depends on the Ford you drive—some models have high reliability ratings, while others don’t. Overall, the Ford brand gets so-so reviews regarding its reliability rating, scoring a 3.5/5 from RepairPal, which ranks the blue oval 21st out of 32 brands.
If you’re considering a Ford, you’ll want to do your homework in terms of model reliability. Here are two reliability ratings for two popular Ford models—the Fusion sedan and the Explorer SUV.

Ford Fusion reliability scores

The
Ford Fusion
gets high reliability ratings, scoring a 4/5 rating from RepairPal while receiving kudos from JD Power with an 81/100 ratings regarding its dependability.

Ford Explorer reliability scores

Meanwhile, the popular
Ford Explorer
did less well. It earned a 3.5/5 rating from RepairPal while also being named one of the least reliable SUVs on the road by Consumer Reports. In fact, Consumer Reports ranked the 2022 Explorer dead last in its reliability rankings for midsize SUVs.

Average Ford repair costs

A Ford CPO warranty can save you some significant cash if you need repairs. According to RepairPal, the average Ford requires an average of $775 in repairs per year. While your Ford CPO warranty might not cover every repair under the hood, it will cover a lot.
For example, the Ford Fusion, despite its dependability, is known to suffer from transmission half shaft leaks, which can cost anywhere between $140 to $170 to repair. Power steering failure is also a common problem, and that can run anywhere from $280 to $370 to fix. Not cheap, so you’ll be glad you’ve got that certified pre-owned warranty.
Likewise, the Explorer is known for problems, too. The 2022 version has already been subject to two recalls, involving a disconnected driveshaft and a detached fuel filter tube. On their own, both problems can be pricey to fix. The disconnected driveshaft can cost nearly $500 to fix, while a detached fuel filter tube costs between $90 and $130 to repair.

Our take: is a Ford CPO warranty worth it?

While a certified pre-owned Ford should be reliable, life can come at you—and your vehicle—fast, so a certified pre-owned Ford warranty is worth it. While you might be tempted to get the cheaper Blue Advantage plan, opting for the Gold Advantage plan gives you better and longer coverage for more peace of mind. Remember, the Blue Advantage plan offers just 90 days of coverage, compared to the Gold plan’s full year of protection. It might cost more, but ultimately, peace of mind is priceless.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
