Key Takeaways
  • Florida drivers need to carry $10,000 PIP and $10,000 PDL.
  • Companies like Embark, Gainsco and Progressive often have low rates for Florida drivers.

Drivers in Florida tend to pay a hefty amount for car insurance premiums compared to other states. The Sunshine State ranks highly for traffic accidents, uninsured drivers are rampant, there’s a litigious environment rife with fraudulent car insurance claims, and extreme weather events like hurricanes, tropical storms, and flash flooding all lead to higher costs for premiums.

Case in point: The state’s minimum coverage costs $269 annually, according to a Jerry analysis. The average cost of full coverage insurance is $395 per month. That’s 15% higher than the national average for full coverage.

What are Florida’s minimum requirements for car insurance?

Under Florida law, drivers are required to carry $10,000 for personal injury protection (PIP) and a minimum of $10,000 for property damage liability (PDL).

When you or somebody else driving your car gets into an accident and are found at fault, PDL coverage helps pay for the damage that your vehicle does to another person’s property.

PIP and PDL are not considered liability coverage and only cover the policyholder — not injuries and damage done to the other driver or passengers subjected to a crash.

PIP allows policyholders to file claims for injuries, lost wages and car repairs when they are injured in an accident regardless of who is found responsible. In Florida, PIP only pays up to the state’s maximum of $10,000 for medical expenses for injuries. This coverage also helps pay some funeral expenses when there’s a fatality.

This unique minimum requirement in Florida, as well as the state passing the No-Fault Law in 1971 as part of the Motor Vehicle Insurance Act, has led to an excess of fraudulent PIP lawsuits. That drives up the costs for policyholders statewide.

Does Florida require drivers to have uninsured/underinsured (UM/UIM) motorists coverage?

Even though Florida drivers have an added risk of a high rate of uninsured drivers on the roads, the state does not require UM/UIM coverage. But including UM coverage to your policy can be a good idea, as the state’s minimum requirements are so low that drivers who get into an accident will likely need more protection.

UM coverage helps pay for your injuries, lost wages and the damage done to your vehicle if you’re affected by a hit and run or get into an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver who is found at fault.

Is full coverage auto insurance recommended in Florida?

Florida’s minimum state requirements are not likely to provide sufficient financial protection in the event you’re in a serious wreck. With various risks unique to the Sunshine State, it can be beneficial that Florida drivers carry full coverage.

Paying more for full coverage may seem expensive in the short term, but it will provide greater financial protection to you if you end up in a significant accident. Without full coverage, you’re exposing yourself to financial risks once your car insurance policy reaches its limit.

What is full coverage car insurance in Florida?

Full coverage car insurance includes the state’s minimum, comprehensive coverage, collision coverage and bodily injury liability.

  • Collision coverage helps pay for repairs to your car that resulted from an accident with another vehicle regardless of if you were found at fault. Collision coverage usually has a deductible.
  • Comprehensive coverage pays for damage to your car that resulted from a non-collision event like an alligator attack, flooding, extreme weather events like a hurricane, vandalism, and theft.
  • Bodily injury liability coverage helps protect you in case you’re found responsible for an accident in which another person gets injured.

What are the factors that determine a car insurance premium in Florida?

In Florida, insurers rate drivers on various factors to determine their risk and profile, including:

  • Driving record.
  • Traffic tickets and violations history.
  • Claims history.
  • Age, gender and marital status.
  • Where you live.
  • The vehicle you drive.
  • Policy deductibles.
  • Credit score.
  • Annual mileage.

  • Maintain a safe driving record.
  • Take a defensive driving course to potentially get a discount.
  • Pay your policy in full and don’t let it lapse.
