What counts as proof of insurance?

Esurance will have your permanent insurance documents ready online within 48 hours of your policy purchase. You can find your
insurance declaration page
and identification card by logging into your Esurance online account or downloading the mobile app.
From the time you purchase your policy to when your permanent documents are ready, Esurance will allow you to print a temporary identification card so you can still hit the road. These documents cover important information about your policy, including Esurance's name and address,
policy number
, and information about your car.
Typically, the declaration page gives drivers a detailed policy overview, including information about their coverage and premium. The insurance identification card is what you should keep in your vehicle (or on you at all times) to show law enforcement or at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to prove you have sufficient coverage for your state.
In almost every state, law enforcement and the DMV will also accept your proof of insurance electronically. In addition, Esurance allows customers to pay their bills, make policy updates, and access proof of insurance through the Esurance mobile app.

How to obtain proof of insurance from Esurance

Getting your proof of insurance from Esurance is simple:
  1. If you just purchased a policy, your temporary insurance card will be available online immediately after purchase. The temporary card will expire after 48 hours, when you can print your permanent documents. You can access your documents by logging into your policy and heading to the “Documents & emails” section.
  2. If you can’t print your documents, Esurance can send your documents in the mail. Unfortunately, If you don’t live in Alabama, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, or South Carolina, there is a $25 fee for this service since. Esurance prefers to keep the majority of its services online.
  3. If you lost any of your documents, the replacement process is identical to how you obtained your documents in the first place. Once you log in to your policy, head to the “Documents & emails” section, where you can print your insurance policy documents.
  4. If you can’t print right now but need your documents, the Esurance mobile app allows you to access your digital identification card. All states except New Mexico and Massachusetts accept digital proof of insurance.

When do you need to show proof of insurance?

You must carry proof of insurance with you in every state except
New Hampshire
and
Massachusetts
. Here are some common scenarios in which you might need to provide proof of insurance:
  • Law enforcement: At traffic stops, you may be requested to show law enforcement your vehicle registration, driver’s license, and proof of insurance. Failure to provide these documents can result in a fine and an insurance premium increase.
  • The DMV: You’ll be asked to provide proof of insurance (and some other documents) whenever you renew your vehicle's license plates.
  • Accident site: Other drivers will need to see your insurance card if you’re at fault in an accident. You can email your identification card directly from the Esurance app at the scene of an accident so the other driver can file a
    bodily injury
    or
    property damage
    claim.
  • Lenders: Lenders will ask for proof of your insurance when applying for a
    car loan
    .
  • Employers: Your employer might ask for proof of insurance if your job involves driving. This ensures you have the right coverage to be driving on the job. The Esurance mobile app makes this hassle-free by allowing you to email your documents directly from the app to your employer.

FAQs

Yes, you can use a PDF as long as it’s a PDF of your identification card and you’re not in New Mexico.
As long as you’re not in New Mexico, you can show proof of insurance physically or digitally. Keeping a physical copy in your vehicle is always a good idea but if you’re in a pinch and need your proof, showing digital proof of insurance through your provider’s app is also ok (as long as you’re not in New Mexico!).
