Car insurance
coverage may not be the first thing that comes to mind when considering the many perks of a Costco membership. But for Costco Anywhere Visa Card holders and Costco car insurance policyholders, certain roadside services may be included or available for purchase to give you some extra peace of mind as you drive.
Here, we’ll go through how you can secure Costco roadside assistance and review the coverages you can expect if you ever need to give roadside assistance a call.

Does Costco offer roadside assistance?

Yes! Costco actually offers several insurance products—emergency roadside assistance is one of them.
You don’t automatically get roadside assistance coverage just by being a Costco member, though. To have access to this coverage option, you’ll either need to have a Costco credit card or a Costco auto insurance policy.
Here’s what you’ll need to know:
  • Costco credit card holders—generally, you can enjoy free roadside assistance 24/7 through Citi if you have a Costco credit card. If you don’t already have Costco’s Anywhere Visa Card (by Citi), you usually need a credit score of at least 750 to be eligible.
  • Costco car insurance policyholders—car insurance through Costco Wholesale is provided by CONNECT, an American Family Insurance company. Coverage limits, tiers, and coverage options vary, but you can usually add 24/7 CONNECT roadside assistance to your policy for a few dollars extra per year. If you don’t already have Costco car insurance, you’ll want a
    good driving record
to secure the most competitive auto insurance rates available.

What does roadside assistance cover?

Now that you know whether Costco roadside assistance is available to you, what does this type of insurance cover? Like most roadside assistance plans, Costco’s roadside assistance allows you to make 24/7 service calls for the following:
  • Flat tire changes
  • Locksmith services
  • Fuel delivery
  • Jump starts
  • Winching (aka extracting a vehicle from a ditch or tricky-to-reach area)
Though you don’t typically have to pay a deductible when you make a call for roadside assistance, CONNECT will only cover up to $75 per incident in most states. In addition to this, you will be fully responsible for battery or fluid replacement costs—this includes gas, oil, and coolant.

How does Costco roadside assistance coverage work?

If you ever find yourself with a broken-down car on a regularly traveled road, Costco’s roadside assistance can come to the rescue at any hour of the day. Since this coverage also follows the driver, you can access this service in any vehicle you’re driving in the U.S., whether it's your own car or a rental.
That said, there are some important limitations to note:
  • In some cases, only vehicles under 12 years old may qualify for roadside assistance coverage.
  • Some Costco credit card holders can only make a maximum of four service calls each year.
  • If roadside assistance needs to provide an uncovered service, you will be charged accordingly.
To summon Costco’s roadside assistance, you can either call 1-888-742-4572 to get in touch with CONNECT or call 1-866-918-4670 to get in touch with Citi’s roadside assistance services. Once you make your call, a service provider will be dispatched to your location as soon as possible.
Note Some Costco credit card holders may pay a one-time fee each time roadside assistance is used but can make unlimited calls. Check with your paperwork to see what specific coverage limitations might apply.

What other insurance add-ons does Costco offer?

Alongside roadside assistance, you can also enhance your Costco auto or
homeowners insurance
with the following similar benefits:
  • Lifetime renewability—certain drivers with Executive membership at Costco may be able to purchase an added guarantee that Costco won’t drop your coverage after an accident
  • Lockout assistance—as a Costco Executive member, you can enhance a home insurance or
    renters insurance
policy with 24/7 aid in case you ever lock yourself out (covers up to $100 per occurrence)
  • Glass repair reimbursement—if you have Executive membership and a Costco homeowners policy, you can usually get covered for up to $1,000 for a broken window replacement or repair
  • Identity theft protection—home and condo insurance policyholders may receive coverage for up to $5,000 in identity theft recovery costs
Like most insurers, you can typically save money on your premiums by
bundling your home and auto insurance
with Costco, so many of these additional coverages may actually make a lot of sense to include.

How to add roadside assistance to your car insurance policy

If you already have a Costco car insurance plan, you can request to add roadside assistance by either calling a CONNECT service rep at 1-866-370-7998 or applying through
Costco’s insurance website
or
mobile app
If you don’t have Costco car insurance or you aren’t a Costco credit card holder, you have a few options to add roadside assistance, too:
  • Your warranty—many warranties or
    extended warranties
    on both
    certified pre-owned
and new vehicles come with roadside assistance coverage.
  • Your car insurance provider—if you have an existing policy with another insurer, you can usually ask your insurance agent to add
    roadside assistance
    to your plan.
  • AAA
—all AAA members are covered by
    AAA’s 24/7 roadside assistance services
, which can be accessed through an online portal or via phone.
  • Credit card companies—Costco’s credit card isn’t the only one with roadside assistance! Capital One Venture Rewards, Chase Sapphire Reserve, and Bank of America Premium Rewards are just a few other credit cards with roadside assistance included or available.
No matter how you choose to add roadside assistance to your coverage, it’s always a good idea to compare coverage costs and included benefits first to make sure you’re getting the best services for the best price.
