Chevrolet’s Extended Limited Warranty includes bumper-to-bumper coverage for five years or 60,000 miles, and costs an average of $2,300 to $4,000, with the exact price depending on a variety of factors.
Every new Chevy already comes standard with a limited warranty that includes three years/36,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage, so when your dealership offers you an extended warranty, you’re right to be skeptical of whether it's worth the added cost.

Overview: What is a Chevrolet extended warranty?

When you purchase a new car, a factory warranty is typically included in the cost of the vehicle—and Chevrolet vehicles are no exception. In order to guarantee that they’ll cover the cost of repairing any possible defects in the design and manufacture of your vehicle, Chevrolet offers a standard factory warranty that includes three years and 36,000 miles of limited bumper-to-bumper coverage, as well as five years and 60,000 miles of powertrain coverage.
Extended warranties do just that—extend the overall life of your warranty—and can be purchased at an additional cost. Chevrolet’s Extended Limited Warranty increases your bumper-to-bumper coverage to five years and 60,000 miles.
You can buy a Chevy extended warranty when you purchase a brand-new vehicle or you can add it on later.

Chevrolet Extended Limited Warranty: Coverage and cost

Chevrolet’s extended warranty offerings are straightforward. There are two basic plans:
  • Chevrolet Extended Limited Warranty: This simply extends your bumper-to-bumper coverage to last 5 years/60,000 miles instead of 3 miles/36,000 miles. No additional perks are included.
  • Chevrolet Platinum Protection Plan: This plan offers additional coverage on top of the regular bumper-to-bumper coverage, as well as some additional perks, and can be purchased for the length of time that you desire (up to 5 years/60,000 miles).

What’s covered

The Extended Limited Warranty covers everything that’s included in your typical factory bumper-to-bumper warranty. Thus, it covers the entire vehicle for repairs, including parts and labor, to correct any defect in materials or workmanship, for the entire duration of the warranty.
The Platinum Protection Plan includes additional bumper-to-bumper coverage that protects more than 1,000 components. This doesn’t just include the engine, transmission, and braking system, but also the air conditioning, seals, video display screen, and other minor components.
With the Platinum Protection Plan, you’ll also enjoy a few additional perks, including:
  • Rental car coverage
  • Towing services
  • Trip interruption protection
  • Lost key and lockout services

What isn’t covered

Even a Platinum Protection plan won’t cover everything. In general, routine maintenance, slight noise/vibrations, or damage due to accident/misuse/insufficient maintenance/alteration won’t be covered.
Here’s a comprehensive list of what isn’t included in your warranty’s coverage:
  • Components covered by your auto insurance like non-moving body parts, glass, sheet metal, paint, rust, etc.
  • Parts covered by required maintenance like batteries, cables, belts, hoses, tires, lights, brake pads, and rotors
  • Anything caused by improper and unreasonable use, like off-roading, drag racing, etc.
  • Modified or custom parts, such as an aftermarket sound system
  • Other components like fabric, upholstery, carpets, dash pad, wiper blades, etc.

Duration

The Extended Limited Warranty can only be purchased in a single duration: five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.
The Platinum Protection Plan is a bit more customizable, allowing you to choose coverage options between two years/24,000 miles and five years/60,000 miles
A great perk? You can transfer or cancel the warranty at any time, with the appropriate fees and paperwork—an option that isn’t always offered by dealerships.

Cost

The exact cost of your Chevrolet extended warranty will depend on a variety of factors, including your geographic location, the type of car you drive, the duration of your coverage, and the amount of your deductible. You can also negotiate the price of your extended warranty with your dealer when purchasing your vehicle.
You’ll need to reach out to your dealer for an exact quote for the extended warranty. Your local Chevrolet dealer may even offer an online tool that you can use to receive a quote.
Here are sample quotes for the Platinum Protection Plan for a 2019 Equinox with less than 30,000 miles:
  • 2 years/24,000 miles: $2,387.35
  • 3 years/ 36,000 miles: $3,202.45
  • 4 years/48,000 miles: $3,828.50
  • 5 years/60,000 miles: $4,011.85

Is it worth getting a Chevrolet extended warranty?

The average extended warranty costs $2,862, which means—based on the above estimates—that Chevy’s extended warranty plans may be a bit more expensive than average.
However, if you can negotiate a smart price, then adding an extended warranty might offer some valuable piece of mind.
One important factor to consider is your vehicle’s long-term reliability.  According to RepairPal, the Chevy brand is rated at 3.5 out of 5.0 for reliability. This rating ranks Chevrolet 20th out of 32 car brands, so it doesn’t exactly sit high in terms of dependability.
When your factory warranty ends, you’ll be responsible to cover any necessary repairs yourself—and, if there’s a high chance that multiple repairs may be needed at once, the extended warranty could save you a bunch of money.
An alternative to Chevrolet’s extended warranty is
mechanical breakdown insurance
(MBI), which may be available through your insurance company. Like an extended warranty, MBI helps to cover the cost of mechanical repairs not caused by wear and tear after your vehicle’s factory warranty expires, but it’s regulated by outside bodies and not purchased through a dealer with a profit incentive.
