Overview: What is an Alfa Romeo extended warranty?

Before we get into extended warranties, let’s talk about the factory warranty that comes with your Alfa Romeo. This basic warranty provides coverage if repairs are needed to fix a manufacturer error or poor craftsmanship. For an Alfa Romeo, you get a four-year/50,000-mile Basic Warranty.
If you want to extend your coverage beyond these limits, you’ll have to purchase an extended warranty plan. Alfa Romeo is part of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) group, along with Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Fiat. All of these brands are eligible for Mopar Vehicle Protection (MVP), which offers two extended warranty plans for Alfa Romeo that max out at eight years/125,000 miles.
To purchase extended warranty coverage, contact your dealership before your four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires. If you haven’t purchased your Alfa Romeo yet, you can also add extended coverage at the time of sale.

Alfa Romeo Mopar Vehicle Protection (MVP): Coverage and cost

Mopar Vehicle Protection (MVP) is offered through the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group. Two extended warranty plans are available for Alfa Romeo drivers:
  • Maximum Care (2–8 years/125,000 miles): Covers 5,000 parts including the engine, transmission, power sliding doors, navigation, wireless charging stations, and backup cameras (excludes parts listed in warranty agreement)
  • Added Care Plus (2–8 years/150,000 miles): Covers 850 parts related to the brakes, engine, transmission, drivetrain, etc.
Both of these plans also come with roadside assistance (flat tire replacement, battery jumpstarts, towing, etc.) and trip interruption coverage. Trip interruption will reimburse you for a rental car, lodging, and meal expenses up to $1000 if your car breaks down more than 100 miles from your home. You’ll also get rental car reimbursement for $35 per day up to a maximum reimbursement of $175.
The great news is that your Alfa Romeo’s Mopar Vehicle Protection will be honored at any FCA dealership in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. For some services, such as towing or certain repairs, you may be required to pay a deductible—however, the MVP coverage will save you from having to pay eligible repair bills out of pocket. MVP coverage makes sure that your Alfa Romeo is repaired using original Mopar-approved parts.
Another bit of good news: MVP extended warranty coverage is transferable to a new owner, increasing your Alfa Romeo’s potential resale value.

What’s covered

An important step to determine if an extended warranty is right for you is deciding how much extra coverage you might need.
If you aren’t sure how long you’re going to be driving your Alfa Romeo, or if you just want the basics, the 2–8 bumper-to-bumper Maximum Care plan may be the better option. Here’s what’s covered:
  • Engine and engine cooling system
  • Transmission and fuel system
  • Electrical components
  • Suspension
  • Brakes
  • Power components
  • Luxury components
  • Safety and security systems
  • Air conditioning
The Maximum Care plan also provides replacement key fobs if you happen to lose yours.
If you’re thinking of hanging on to your Alfa Romeo for the foreseeable future and want some extra protection, you might be better off with the Added Care Plus plan. An enhanced powertrain warranty, this warranty coverage includes:
  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • Steering and brakes
  • Front- and rear-wheel drive
  • Air conditioning
  • Suspension
  • Electrical parts
Even though this isn’t a full list of all of the parts covered, you can see there’s some overlap between the two plans. As mentioned, both extended warranties come with roadside assistance, trip interruption, and rental reimbursement. The main difference is that Added Care Plus coverage can be added for 25,000 more miles.

What isn’t covered

Even though your Alfa Romeo extended warranty will protect against manufacturer error and defects for the above components, there are some notable exceptions. Here’s what won’t be covered under your MVP warranty:
  • Regular maintenance and oil changes
  • Catalytic converter
  • Windshield and mirror damage
  • Wear and tear to the exterior paint
  • Any added snowplows, winches, or trailers
  • Tires
  • Brake pads
  • Rotors, drums, belts, and wiper blades
If you’re concerned about your cosmetic or tire damages, there are a couple of add-ons that you can purchase, such as road hazard protection. Knowing the kind of protection you want going into your dealership can help you keep a clear head when you’re presented with all of the available options.

Duration

If you want to max out your extended warranty, both MVP plans offered for Alfa Romeo top out at eight years. The Added Care Plus plan has the highest mileage limit of the two at 150,000 miles, but you have to purchase coverage for at least five years. With the Maximum Care plan, you’ll be able to get up to 125,000 miles of coverage, but you can choose a shorter duration at a minimum of two years.

Cost

Now that we’ve looked at what’s offered for your Alfa Romeo’s extended warranty, it’s time for the big question: how much will it cost? Unfortunately, there isn’t an easy answer. The exact cost of your Mopar Vehicle Protection extended warranty will depend on your vehicle, coverage level, duration, and deductible
To give you an idea, Alfa Romeo warranty coverage will generally cost $1000 a year. If this seems steep, remember that a luxury brand costs more to replace and repair. Depending on your dealership, you may be able to negotiate a lower price.
You can also expect to pay more for the Added Care Plus warranty as compared to the Maximum Care option. Also, the more years and miles you add to your extended coverage, the higher you’ll pay overall.
And don’t forget about the deductible! You’ll have your choice of three deductible amounts: $0, $100, or $200. Generally, choosing a higher deductible will mean the overall warranty will cost less.
Your dealership may also offer additional perks for signing up for an Alfa Romeo extended warranty. But again, it will all depend on the kind of warranty coverage you’re looking for and what your dealership has on offer.

Is it worth getting an Alfa Romeo extended warranty?

In the end, whether it’s worth it to get an extended warranty is completely up to you
There are benefits, such as longer coverage for your high-value vehicle, extra perks like roadside assistance, and the peace of mind that comes from a long-term warranty. But there are also cons, such as the extra cost and the very real chance that you will never use the coverage you’re paying for.
Given that Alfa Romeo owners tend to keep their cars longer than the average luxury car buyer, and that Alfa Romeo’s have an average reliability rating, an extended warranty may fall on the pros side of the discussion—if you’re looking forward to spending the next decade with your Alfa Romeo and know that there’s a good chance of a breakdown in your car’s future, extended warranty coverage may be just what you need!
An alternative to an extended warranty is
mechanical breakdown insurance
(MBI). Provided through some insurance companies, MBI will help cover repairs after your factory warranty expires. If an extended warranty seems like too much of an expensive commitment, talk to your insurance provider to see what coverages may be available to fill in the gaps.
