Overview: what is an Acura extended warranty?

Every new Acura comes with a New Vehicle Limited Warranty. This bumper-to-bumper warranty pays for repairs of any of the car’s components that have manufacturing-related defects for four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. Additionally, Acura’s Powertrain Warranty covers defective components related to the powertrain for six years or 70,000 miles
When these limited warranties run their course, some drivers opt for an extended warranty for additional peace of mind. This is a vehicle service contract that lengthens the life of your warranties to eight years or 120,000 miles.
If you aren’t ready to commit to buying an Acura extended warranty on the day you purchase your new vehicle, you can contact the dealership and add it later, but you must do so before your New Vehicle Limited Warranty expires

Acura Care extended warranty: coverage and cost

An Acura extended warranty is known as an Acura Care Vehicle Service Contract and can be a great option for owners of new or used Acura vehicles. But before we get into the coverage you’ll get through Acura Care, let’s go over the built-in warranties that come with an Acura purchase.
The following limited warranties protect all brand new Acuras:
  • New Limited Vehicle Warranty: Covers bumper-to-bumper manufacturing or workmanship-related defects for four years or 50,000 miles.
  • Rust Perforation Limited Warranty: Covers repair or replacement of any Acura body panel that rusts from the inner surface to the outer surface within the first five years. This warranty has no mileage limit.
  • Powertrain Limited Warranty: Covers manufacturing or workmanship-related defects to components of the transmission, engine, gaskets, drive axle seals, and fluids for six years or 70,000 miles.
  • 12-Volt Battery Replacement Limited Warranty: Covers a replacement battery for 100 months (eight years and four months), but does not cover the associated cost of labor. This warranty has no mileage limit.
  • Seat Belt Limited Warranty: Covers the repair of broken or non-functioning Acura seat belts for 15 years or 150,000 miles.
Acura limited warranties are honored at most Acura dealerships and even some
Honda
dealerships nationwide. If you want your repairs done at a Honda Service Center, contact them ahead of time to make sure they’ll cover them. If they won’t, have the work done at an Acura Service Center instead.
If you drive a certified pre-owned Acura between the years 2017 and 2022 with less than 80,000 miles on the odometer, you’ll get the added benefit of a Powertrain Warranty extension and a non-powertrain coverage extension
The powertrain extension lengthens the coverage period from six years or 70,000 miles to seven years or 100,00 miles. As for the non-powertrain warranty extension, that’s in effect for two years or 100,000 miles. You’ll also receive your first scheduled maintenance for free, including a complimentary oil change
Acura drivers who want to safeguard the components of their vehicle for as long as possible can purchase an Acura Care extended warranty and stay protected for eight years or 120,000 miles.

What’s covered

An Acura Care extended warranty picks up where your New Limited Vehicle Warranty leaves off, potentially saving you thousands of dollars on necessary service for aging Acura vehicles.
But that’s not all. Acura Care kicks it up a notch by offering travel protection too! Acura’s extended warranty also includes:
  • Roadside Assistance with towing
  • 24/7 concierge service to assist with emergencies, travel assistance, and more
  • Rental car reimbursement covers up to $45 per day for a six-day maximum
  • Trip interruption reimbursement covers up to $100 per day for a three-day maximum
It’s also important to know that the details of a Vehicle Service Contract vary from driver to driver. For specific information regarding the cost and length of your extended warranty, you’ll need to contact your Acura dealer, but generally speaking, Acura Care covers the following components:
  • Engine, including heating and cooling systems
  • Exhaust manifold
  • Transmission
  • Axles
  • Differential
  • Computers
  • Electronic systems, including infotainment and navigation
  • Brake system
  • Steering
  • Suspension
  • Security system
  • Audio/communication system
  • Air conditioner
Remember, Acura Care must be added to your vehicle before it reaches four years old or exceeds 50,000 miles. If you let the New Vehicle Limited Warranty lapse, Acura Care will no longer be an option and you’ll need to find an extended warranty through a third-party vendor.

What isn’t covered

The Acura Care extended warranty functions almost exactly like the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Let’s look at what’s not covered under Acura's extended warranty:
  • General wear and tear
  • Improper use
  • Overheating
  • Adding fluids (unless required as part of the warranty-related repair)
  • Cosmetic damage
  • Wheels, including tires and rims
  • Windshield damage
  • Windshield wipers
  • Batteries
  • Bulbs
  • Fuses
  • Air filters or oil filters
  • Brake pads
  • Routine maintenance
  • Customizations or aftermarket parts
Keep in mind that as part of the Vehicle Service Contract, you’re expected to follow the factory-recommended maintenance schedule. Failure to maintain proper routine maintenance could result in the repair your Acura needs not being covered by the extended warranty when they otherwise might have been.

Duration

As we mentioned earlier, the details regarding the duration and cost will be worked out with your Acura dealer, but an Acura Care Vehicle Service Contract will last a maximum of eight years or 120,000 miles.
You will gain access to several of the extended warranty benefits at the date of purchase, but the warranty-related coverage for repairs to your Acura won’t start until your New Vehicle Limited Warranty and Limited Powertrain Warranty expire.

Cost

Again, the exact cost of your Acura extended warranty is contingent upon the Vehicle Service Contract you sign with Acura. Prices for Acura Care will vary, but in general, customers pay around $2,200 per year for the maximum extended warranty.
Your warranty’s total cost also depends on what model you drive, the model year, and the trim level of the vehicle. There’s also the option to pay a $0 or $100 deductible for your warranty-covered service. If you agree to pay the $100 deductible, the upfront cost of your extended warranty will be cheaper.

Is it worth getting an Acura extended warranty?

It could be. If you plan to keep your Acura for as long as possible, an extended warranty may help you avoid some expensive repairs.
On the other hand, if you purchase a new or certified pre-owned Acura and intend to sell it after a few years, an extended warranty may not be financially worth it.
You’ll be under the protective arm of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty for the first four years or 50,000 miles, plus the Powertrain Limited Warranty which spans the first six years or 70,000 miles. If you’ve got a Certified-Preowned Acura, the CPO Warranty, powertrain warranty, and non-powertrain warranties last up to 100,000 miles.
There’s also the reliability factor to consider. In a report from RepairPal, Acura ranked second among 32 brands for reliability—Honda ranked first. They estimate that the average Acura owner will spend about $501 a year on repairs, which is $151 lower than the industry average.
Since Acuras are generally quite reliable, the cost of an extended warranty might not be worth it. That said, if you purchase an Acura extended warranty and later decide to sell your vehicle, the warranty is transferable to the new owner. Selling a gently used Acura armed with an extended warranty can boost the vehicle’s sale price.
