Indecision might be your worst enemy when picking the perfect 2022 5 Series with four main trim levels
(each with a different engine), two available drivetrains, and eight add-on packages. A major factor that separates the trim levels is the drivetrain. Rear-wheel drive is standard for the 530i, 530e
, and 540i trims, while the deluxe M550i
model is standard equipped with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system. The lower trim models also have the option of upgrading to the xDrive powertrain, bringing the total number of configurations to seven. Furthermore, there are seven packages available for all four- and six-cylinder models, as well as one more for the eight-cylinder M550i. These packages include:
Convenience: adds heated front seats and a power trunk lid
Premium: adds convenience features like heated rear seats, remote engine start, and a heads-up display
Executive: adds premium features like unique center console controls and a power rear sunshade
Driving Assistance Professional: adds driver’s aid features like adaptive cruise control and a lane-keeping system
Luxury seating: adds ventilated seats and 20-way multi-contour front seats
M sport: adds sport driving features like a sport steering wheel, sport suspension, and choice between 19- and 20-inch wheels
Dynamic handling: only available for the 540i, includes adaptive suspension and active roll stabilization
Dynamic handling: only available for the M550i, includes active steering, active roll stabilization, and a high-performance adaptive suspension

BMW 530i with RWD
The base 530i model has a fuel economy of 28 combined mpg and is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 248 horsepower
and 258 lb-ft of torque. It also comes outfitted with a wealth of standard features, including: Digital gauge cluster display
12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen
Front and rear parking sensors
BMW 530i with xDrive (AWD)
Paying a few extra grand will get you the all-wheel drive version of the 530i, equipped with the same features and engine as the RWD model. The xDrive system will give you a boost to power and performance, but at a small cost to fuel efficiency—26 combined mpg.
BMW 530e with RWD
The 530e comes with the same features as the lower 530i trim, and an upgraded turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor—making the 530e a plug-in hybrid. It has a fuel economy of 26 mpg for gasoline and 64 MPGe when using the hybrid drive mode. In addition, the 530e can travel up to 21 miles using only electric power.
BMW 530e with xDrive (AWD)
For an extra $2,500, the 530e can also be equipped with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system. Once again, fuel efficiency will be slightly affected—62 MPGe and 25 mpg.
BMW 540i with RWD
In terms of features, the 540i is kitted out with more or less the same stuff as the 530i and 530e—parking sensors, navigation system, etc. The major difference is that the 540i is equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that generates 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, with a fuel economy of 27 combined mpg.
BMW 540i with xDrive (AWD)
For an extra $2,000, you can upgrade your 540i with the all-wheel drive system. Once again, expect a slight dip in performance for the fuel economy—only 25 combined mpg. Remember, too, that all of the above trim levels can be upgraded with most of the add-on packages listed earlier.
BMW M550i with xDrive (AWD)
The M550i represents the ultimate commitment to both luxury and performance, with standard all-wheel drive, genuine leather upholstery, and a booming turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. At 20 combined mpg, it has the worst fuel economy of all 5 Series models, but it more than makes up for it with:
Electronically controlled rear differential (for sportier performance)
Adaptive sport suspension
