With a top combined fuel economy rating of 26 mpg, the 2021 Jeep Cherokee is not extremely fuel efficient. The Nissan Rogue, on the other hand, is.

background
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee is many things, but fuel-efficient is not one of them. With a combined city/highway rating of 22 mpg, the 2021 Cherokee lags behind the competition when it comes to fuel consumption.
It’s important to know how fuel-efficient your SUV is. You don’t want to head off-road in the wilderness with your Cherokee only to be surprised by a suddenly empty tank. So, how good is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee on gas?

2021 Jeep Cherokee fuel economy

The ‘21 Cherokee was made available in five trim levels; the Latitude,
Latitude Plus
,
Latitude Lux
,
Trailhawk
, and
Limited
. Each trim was customizable with an engine upgrade, and four-wheel drive was optional on all models except the Trailhawk, on which it came standard.
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee's gas mileage depends on its engine and drivetrain configuration. The two lowest
trims
—the Latitude and Latitude Plus—came with a standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine connected to a nine-speed
automatic transmission
.
Front-wheel-drive
models with the standard engine offer a combined fuel economy rating of 26 mpg—that’s 23 city mpg and 31 highway mpg. The 2021 Jeep Cherokee's mpg goes down when you combine the base engine with four-wheel drive, returning a combined 24 mpg rating.
Cherokees from the Latitude Lux trim up to the high-end Limited trim received the 271-horsepower V6 engine standard. Paired with standard front-wheel drive, this engine gives the 2021 Cherokee a combined rating of 23 miles per gallon. Predictably, pairing the V6 with four-wheel drive costs the Cherokee one combined mile, for a rating of 22 mpg.
A 270-
horsepower
turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine—the lineup’s most powerful motor—was available on all trims except the Trailhawk which was married to the V6. Somewhat surprisingly, the most powerful engine wasn’t the least efficient. The turbo-four combined with front-wheel drive provides a combined fuel economy of 26 mpg, while the turbo-four with four-wheel drive produced a combined rating of 24 mpg.
Oddly, the Trailhawk, with its mandatory V6 engine and compulsory four-wheel drive, delivers a combined fuel economy rating of 21 mpg—one less than other trims with the same setup.
Generally speaking, the Jeep Cherokee fuel tank size is generous. The 2021 Cherokee is furnished with a 15.8-gallon fuel tank regardless of the trim, engine, or drivetrain, and regular unleaded gas is its regular diet. Edmunds estimates the average monthly fuel cost for the 2021 Cherokee at around $175, which is quite a bit below the average midsize SUV fuel bill of $225 per month.
The Jeep Cherokee isn’t going to win any fuel efficiency awards, but it should be noted that the veteran trail boss’s combined numbers are hampered by poor city stats. Drivers who spend more time on
highways
will experience better overall fuel efficiency than city Cherokee owners.
Key takeaway: Models with four-cylinder engines and front-wheel drive are the most fuel-efficient 2021 Jeep Cherokees.

Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee good on gas?

Drumroll, please—no, the 2021 Jeep Cherokee is not very good on gas. If fuel efficiency is paramount, you might want to skip the Cherokee and find something a little more gas-conscious, especially if you anticipate doing a lot of city driving.
One great alternative is the 2021
Nissan Rogue
. The Rogue is the most fuel-efficient Ute in its class registering a fuel economy rating of 26 mpg city and 33.5 mpg highway. The Rogue’s interior is also finely appointed with hints of luxury that outdo the utilitarian Cherokee.
All told, while the 2021 Jeep Cherokee stands at the top of the heap for its off-road capabilities, when it comes to fuel efficiency it trails the pack.

How to improve fuel efficiency for a 2021 Jeep Cherokee

The Jeep Cherokee does have a loyal following, especially for its incredible off-road faculties. So, if not having a Cherokee is not an option, here are some ways you can at least improve your Cherokee’s fuel efficiency.
  • Take it easy on the throttle. Engines operate inefficiently at high RPMs. You can save on fuel by accelerating more gradually and making use of your cruise control to regulate your engine’s output.
  • Take a load off. Carrying extra weight makes your engine work harder, causing it to burn more gas. Remove heavy items from your Cherokee, like that dentist’s chair you found on the side of the highway. Your wallet will thank you.
  • Keep up with your regular maintenance schedule.  Maintaining your Cherokee in proper working order will eliminate and prevent inefficiencies from gobbling up your fuel unnecessarily.

How to save on 2021 Jeep Cherokee insurance costs

Owning a 2021 Jeep Cherokee can be an expensive endeavor. Not only is the Cherokee less than fuel-efficient, but the average
Jeep Cherokee car insurance cost
is more than twice the national average. That’s because insurance companies consider off-road vehicles to be at a higher risk of getting into an accident.
