How to interpret car specs

If you’re a newcomer to the world of car specs, these numbers and categories might look like they’re written in a different language. That’s why we’ve created a quick translation guide to for each category:
  • Base curb weight: This is your
    vehicle’s weight
with a full tank and all standard equipment.
  • Dimensions: Vehicle manufacturers include dimension measurements to give drivers a sense of how big or small their vehicle is. Compare dimensions between different vehicles to get a better sense of the size.
  • Drivetrain: On most vehicles, front-wheel drive comes standard. But if you’re going to be driving on uneven terrain or need a vehicle with strong handling, all-wheel drive may be the better option.
  • Engine displacement
: This measures the volume taken up your vehicle’s cylinders, or in simpler terms, the size of your engine.
  • Ground clearance: A measurement particularly important for the off-road inclined, ground clearance measures the distance between the lowest part of the vehicle’s body and a level ground surface.
  • Horsepower: In technical terms, one horsepower refers to the power needed to raise 550 pounds by one foot in a single second. In other words, horsepower is the measurement of your engine’s power.
  • Torque: You can think of torque as horsepower’s
    rotational counterpart
. As a vehicle’s wheel spinning, or torque, increases, so too does a vehicle’s power.
“I saw an ad for
Jerry
on Instagram and decided to give it a try. I have a terrible driving record, but Nathan still helped me. Before, almost no one wanted to insure me. Now, I have a great policy and save $200/month. I’m one happy gal!” —Terri C.
