Style in a small package: the 2020 BMW 8-series coupe

The 2020 BMW 8-series is no joke of a sports car—but it’s loads of fun. Or does 0 to 60 in 4.9 seconds mean nothing to you?
Available as RWD or AWD and as coupe or convertible, you’ll have loads of options to sift through. The less powerful 840i trims will bring you a twin-turbo V6 engine with 335-hp @ 5000 rpm, while the more impressive 850i will bring a twin-turbo V8 engine with 523-hp @ 5500 rpm
The details—both interior and exterior—are exquisite. Power adjustable sport seats, 50/50 folding rear seat, heated leather steering wheel, valet function, wireless charging, and leather upholstery all around on the inside—plus exterior luxuries like light-tinted glass, cornering lights, and a power open/close trunk. It varies depending on the trim and drivetrain, but you’ll see about 24 mpg (combined) with this sports car.
You probably won’t snag this car brand new, so you’ll want to shop the used car market. Since the 2020 8-series is so recent, we recommend going with a certified pre-owned (CPO) 8-series if you can find one available. If not, no worries—you can use all your favorite used car listing sites to source a beautiful 8-series coupe.
According to
Kelley Blue Book
, used 2020 BMW 8-series coupes sell for around $68,914—but remember that the trims and drivetrains significantly impact the cost of this car, and aftermarket mods can raise the used price significantly.

Is the 2020 BMW 8-series coupe comfortable?

Some have called the back seat of the 2020 8-series coupe (and convertible) “useless,” and that might be all you need to know about the back seat of this powerhouse car. The back seat is maybe only there for cargo space—or to classify the car as a 4-seater—but it’s not particularly usable by adult passengers.
If you’re in a situation where you merely need to legally transport a couple extras in the back, the 8-series will do. But for all intents and purposes, you shouldn’t get this car if you plan on having more than two passengers inside regularly.

Is the 2020 BMW 8-series coupe reliable?

JD Power
gave the 2020 BMW 8-series coupe a Quality & Reliability score of 85—“Great”—out of 100. This score takes into account quality issues and manufacturing defects that customers encountered with their 2020 BMW 8-series coupes. In short, this score is indeed great! You don’t need to be worried about blaring reliability issues with the 2020 8-series.

Is the 2020 BMW 8-series coupe safe?

The 2020 BMW 8-series coupe has not yet received a safety rating from the
NHTSA
. But the NHTSA does list four recalls for this car. That doesn’t mean there is certainly a recall on a 2020 BMW 8-series you buy—but there might be. Make sure to do your research and verify whether or not there are any recalls on the used 8-series coupe you might purchase, because they might impact the safety of your coupe.

2020 BMW 8-series coupe trim levels

The 2020 lineup of the BMW 8-series sees two main variations: the 840i and the M850i xDrive. Both trims come in the option of coupe or convertible. The less powerful 840i comes with standard rear-wheel drive unless you opt for xDrive, BMW’s trademark all-wheel drive drivetrain. The M850i only comes with an all-wheel drive per its namesake.
The 840i Coupe ($88,895 original MSRP) and 840i Convertible ($98,395 original MSRP) have an intercooled twin-turbo V6 engine that produces 335-hp @ 5000 rpm and 368 lb-ft of torque @ 1600 rpm.
But upgrade to the M850i xDrive and you’ll be greeted with more power—albeit at a higher price tag. The M850i xDrive Coupe originally had an MSRP of $112,895—over $10,000 more than the standard 840i Coupe—but the ride comes with a twin-turbo V8 engine that pumps out a whopping 523-hp @ 5500 rpm and 553 lb-ft of torque @ 1800 rpm. As with the 840i, you’ll have the option of coupe or convertible—but the convertible will run you about $10k more than the coupe.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
