Fourteen of these were related to the electrical system, and 12 were about the electronic stability control (ESC) system. Service brake complaints were the next highest category with 9 complaints.

Many drivers reported that the warning systems and lights would go on without reason—giving collision alerts when there was nothing in the way, or giving traction control alerts on dry pavement. In several cases, this was accompanied by a drastic reduction in power or sometimes, a total loss of power—causing the car to shut down completely.

The front collision avoidance sensors have been reported to not work at all or to continuously report a collision threat when there was none. As the Kicks is equipped with automatic emergency braking, this resulted in many reports of the car needlessly activating its emergency braking system when there was no reason to do so.

There was one recall issued for the 2018 Nissan Kicks due to a problem with the backup camera not displaying an image. Several others also reported that the image on the backup camera was very blurry and difficult to see. Needless to say, this could pose a serious safety risk.

There isn’t a lot of information out there on the reliability of the 2018 Nissan Kicks. RepairPal doesn’t have any information for Kicks of any year, and J.D. Power is unfortunately silent when it comes to the 2018 model year.

Here’s what we do know: Nissan in general has a good reputation when it comes to reliability, and gets an above-average 4/5 rating from RepairPal. That said, the reliability reports for other Kicks model years aren’t terribly stellar. The 2020 Kicks got a 68/100 in quality and reliability from J.D. Power, and the 2021 Kicks got a 2/5 from Consumer Reports.
