With its base four-cylinder engine, the 2018 Nissan Altima generates just 179 hp, falling short of claiming sport sedan status. But the 3.5-liter V6-powered Altima generates up to 270 horsepower—and both are paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive.
The 2018 Altima’s cushy front seats, outstanding fuel economy, and excellent safety scores live up to the manufacturer’s reputation for reliability and comfort.
And while all of these factors can make for a smooth ride, just how much horsepower does the 2018 Altima boast?

2018 Nissan Altima horsepower

The amount of horsepower a car can produce is determined by the engine it has under its hood. In the case of the 2018 Altima, you have two options.
The standard engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that can produce 179 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 177 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 RPM. Although its engine—combined with an Xtronic continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive—is competent, it won't provide any exciting on-road experiences.
This is the right engine for you if speed isn't your top priority, and grocery runs or drives to work take up most of your time on the road. When new, the base S trim had an MSRP of $24,155, but used models currently sell for around $17,000 or less.
If you want a bit more power, the 3.5-liter V6 engine is your best bet—it produces 270 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 251 pound-feet of torque at 4,400 RPM. The Altima 3.5 SL trim started at $33,630 in 2018 and features larger 18-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control, and NissanConnect services with emergency telematics.
Don't expect the 2018 Altima to set any lap records, despite the V6 engine. It can take about eight seconds to get from 0 to 60 mph.
Overall, the Altima is competent both on and off the road, particularly when it comes to efficiency, but other vehicles offer more competitive acceleration and performance power
