How to interpret car specs

To be able to say, “wow, those specs are impressive,” it’s vital to know what those specs mean! Here’s a quick crash course in some basic automotive spec lingo:
  • Base curb weight: This is the weight of the vehicle with standard equipment and a full tank of gas. This is not to be confused with the
    gross vehicle weight
, which is the maximum amount of weight your car can safely carry.
  • Dimensions: The basic dimensions give you an idea of how big a vehicle is, inside and out. It helps to compare the specs with a car you’re familiar with to get a real-world sense of what they mean.
  • Drivetrain: Front, rear, or all-wheel drive? Front-wheel drive is the standard most of the time, but performance vehicles or ones that are meant to go off-road often have all-wheel drive for added traction and control.
  • Engine displacement
: This is the volume that’s taken up by your engine’s cylinders, and gives you an idea of how large an engine is.
  • Ground clearance: This is the measurement between the lowest part of your vehicle’s chassis and the ground on a flat surface, and it’s particularly important if you’re taking a vehicle off road.
  • Horsepower: Spoiler alert—it’s not actually the power generated by one horse! Technically, horsepower is the power needed to raise 550 pounds by one foot in one second. In other words, it’s a measurement of the engine’s power.
  • Torque: This spec tells you how much
    rotational power
an engine has. Think of it as the kind of power that’s needed to unscrew an over-tightened jar lid, versus the power needed to give up and hurl it at the wall in despair.
  • Turning diameter: This represents the smallest semicircle that’s needed for the vehicle to make a complete U-turn. Ever hear the phrase “turn on a dime?” That’s what a vehicle with a small turning diameter can do!

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
