The most common 2018 Audi Q5 problems

Audi is known for making some amazing compact cars and has many ardent fans, but when it comes to reliability, the luxury automaker’s reputation is a bit lackluster. While it’s not a bad vehicle per se, the reliability of the 2018 Audi Q5 doesn’t quite measure up to its competitors.
The majority of complaints are about the electrical system and the brakes, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported a total of six recalls
Reported issues with the brakes include:
  • Insufficient coating on brake caliper pistons can cause a reduction in brake performance
  • Hydraulic brake failure stemming from the brake master cylinder being too short, which can cause a sudden loss of brakes
The Q5 has also been reported to have catastrophic electrical issues. In particular, there were several reports of loss of power caused by liquid being spilled in the back seat and seeping through to a major electrical control module. Liquids and electronics definitely don’t mix, especially with an SUV geared towards families.
There were six formal recalls issued for the 2018 Audi Q5, three of them being the issues discussed above. The other three recalls were for the following problems:
  • Airbags or seat belt pretensioners may not deploy
  • Wheel arch trim cover may detach (front wheels)
  • Wheel arch trim cover may detach (rear wheels)
While a loose wheel trim arch cover has the potential to become a road hazard or cause some damage to your car, it’s more in the annoying than hazardous category. On the other hand, airbag and seat belt failure? Yikes.

Is the 2018 Audi Q5 reliable?

Overall, the 2018 Audi Q5 has an average reliability score for a luxury midsize SUV.
In general, feature-heavy luxury cars tend to be more expensive to repair and maintain, simply because there’s more stuff to break down. The average annual cost of 2018 Audi Q5 repairs is approximately $730, which is higher than average.
RepairPal rates it a 3 out of 5 for reliability. While that isn’t bad, it’s just, well, average. Out of 14 similar midsize luxury SUVs, the 2018 Audi Q5 ranks 11th when it comes to reliability. J.D. Power seconds the motion, with a score of 76/100 for quality and reliability.
These marks aren’t bad, but they do mean that if you’re looking for the most reliable luxury SUV, the 2018 Audi Q5 won’t be it.
