A driver’s side airbag inflation problem and a side curtain airbag malfunction are two of the most pressing problems that have affected the 2017 Chevrolet Traverse.
The 2017 Chevrolet Traverse is a capable, spacious, and smooth family hauler that will get you and the kids from A to B on schedule. It also boasts lots of cargo space to accommodate all your trips and errands, whether you’re taking the family to the Grand Canyon or hauling the week’s groceries back home.
But even the most solid vehicle has its problems, and the 2017 Chevy Traverse is no exception.

The most common 2017 Chevrolet Traverse problems

J.D. Power gives the 2017 Traverse an 80/100 reliability rating, which is solid (if unspectacular). But there were problems with the 2017 Traverse, some of which spurred recalls.
In 2021, Chevrolet issued a recall for the 2017 Traverse due to the potential for the driver’s side airbag inflator to explode. An explosion could cause sharp metal fragments to hit the driver or passengers, with the potential to cause serious injury or death. Chevrolet said this issue was a manufacturing defect.
Also in 2021, Chevrolet issued a recall due to the 2017 Traverse’s side curtain airbags not being secured. Unsecured side curtain airbags may not perform as designed, thereby increasing the potential for injury in case of a collision.
A third notable issue was unexpected brake failure leading to unintended acceleration. In one case, this led one Traverse driver to unintentionally accelerate into a house where, upon impact, the airbag didn't deploy. The driver wasn’t injured, although a person in the home was. There was no recall for this issue.
Other problems that Traverse owners have complained about include:
  • The horn not working
  • Power windows and doors not working
  • Squeaking noise when braking
  • Leaks in the high-pressure power steering lines
  • Original tires showing considerable wear at 25,000 miles
