How to interpret car specs

Car specs can seem like another language if you’re not familiar with the terms. Don’t worry—we’ve made a super quick overview of some of the most common car spec lingo:
  • Base curb weight: This measurement is the
    car’s gross vehicle weight rating
with a full tank of gas and standard equipment, minus passenger weight.
  • Dimensions: These are the interior or exterior measurements that the manufacturers provide. Reading dimensions helps you estimate how large (or small) your vehicle is, especially if you compare the measurements to a car you know well.
  • Drivetrain: Most vehicles have front-wheel drive (FWD) as the standard drivetrain, but some offer all-wheel drive (AWD) capability. AWD is handy if you often drive on challenging terrain or want to take your wheels off-road.
  • Engine displacement
: Technically, this is the measure of volume taken up by the engine’s cylinders. It’s basically how big your car’s engine is!
  • Ground clearance: This number is the distance from the lowest part of the car’s body and the ground (or level surface).
  • Horsepower: You can think of horsepower as how powerful the engine is. One horsepower is the amount of power your vehicle needs to raise 550 pounds by one foot in one second.
  • Torque: This number goes hand in hand with horsepower—torque is its rotational counterpart. Torque shows you how effective the car is at turning its wheels.
  • Turning diameter: If you need to do a full U-turn, this is the diameter of the smallest semicircle you need to make in order to complete the turn.
