The most common 2015 Chevrolet Malibu problems

The midsize sedan’s biggest failures by far involve its engine and electrical systems. Several Malibu drivers have reported an “engine power reduced” message appearing on their dashboard before the vehicle quickly reduced its speed and completely shut off the engine while in traffic, causing many to pull over to the side of the road and wait for their engine to start again.
If you’re driving fast on the highway, we’d imagine this situation would be beyond frightening for any driver! But the engine power reduced message means your Chevy Malibu has reduced your engine’s power if an issue with your engine or related component has been detected.
This is one of the most common complaints from 2015 Malibu owners as 50 drivers have submitted complaints about the engine, while 52 drivers complained about the electrical system to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) with much overlap from drivers about receiving the engine power reduced message.
Overall, the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu has received a whopping 212 complaints. Other common problems include:
  • Electrical power steering system failures
  • Airbag warning light issues
  • Uncomfortable second-row seats
  • Lack of rear visibility
  • Engine/exhaust can be very noisy
  • Passlock sensor problems
The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu has received three formal recalls. The first recall involved the possibility of the roof panel automatically closing unexpectedly, while the second recall dealt with a potential rupture in the inflator of the side airbags that could result in them not inflating properly in the event of a crash. The last recall involved an error with the parking lock that allowed the key to be removed from the ignition without the car in park.

Is the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?

In spite of these questionable issues, the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu has received above-average reliability scores.
To start, the midsize sedan received an overall five-star safety rating from NHTSA. RepairPal also gives the Malibu an excellent 4/5 rating for reliability, ranking it 9th out of 24 vehicles in its class. At the same time, J.D. Power rated the Chevy Malibu 92/100 for quality and reliability with an overall score of 84/100
The average annual cost of repairs for a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu is about $460, which is lower than average ownership costs compared to rivals as repairs are less severe and frequent. This makes the 2015 Malibu one of the most reliable vehicles in the midsize sedan segment.
