How to interpret car specs

Is your head spinning yet? The above specs provide extremely helpful information—but only if you know how to interpret them. Here are some key definitions you’ll need to know:
  • Base curb weight: This is simply the vehicle’s weight measured with all of the standard options and a full tank of fuel.
  • Dimensions: These measurements are provided by the manufacturer to describe your car’s size—inside and out!
  • Drivetrain: Your vehicle’s engine will send power to the front wheels, rear wheels, or all four wheels.
  • Engine displacement
: This specifically tells you how many liters of oil are taken up by your engine’s cylinders while it’s working—but you can think of it as a description of how big the engine is.
  • Ground clearance: This measurement is taken from the lowest part of your vehicle’s chassis to the ground beneath it and is essential to know if you plan to drive your vehicle on rough terrain.
  • Horsepower: One horsepower describes the power needed to raise 550 pounds by a single foot in one second. This basically describes how much raw power your engine produces!
  • Torque: We described horsepower as raw power, but torque is its rotational counterpart. This number basically tells you how well the vehicle spins its wheels.
  • Turning diameter: This number is a measurement of the diameter of the smallest semicircle required for the vehicle to complete a full U-turn.
