With a six-figure starting price, head-spinning looks, and relentless sports performance, the 2015 Audi R8 V10 Convertible (aka the Spyder) is a showpiece for what
Audi
engineers can do when they’re unleashed.
The R8 V10 did come in a coupe, but come on—this car was made for feeling the wind in your hair, and for being seen behind the wheel. If you’ve ever dreamed of cruising the open highway like a rockstar or Hollywood royalty, then the Audi R8 V10 Spyder will let you live the fantasy. Just don’t fantasize about packing a lot of stuff. There’s very little space in the trunk.

Sent from the heavens: the 2015 Audi R8 V10 Convertible

The Audi R8 is what the auto industry calls a halo vehicle. Halo vehicles are cars that go to the absolute limit in terms of everything that a maker is known for—the pinnacle of style, performance, and technology, wrapped in one glowing package.
Many reviewers deemed the Audi R8 a “practical supercar”, but let’s be real—those words shouldn’t really go together. Offered as both a coupe and a convertible (called the Spyder), the 2015 Audi R8 V10 started at around $170,000 when it was new. Today, a used one will run around $100,000 to $150,000 depending on the options.
So exactly what makes it so great? Let’s start with that V10 in the name. This refers to the 525 horsepower, 2.5-liter V10 engine that’s crouched under the hood. This will get you from 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds, accompanied by a chorus of angels—or maybe that’s just the pulse-quickening roar this beast produces. All-wheel drive is standard, and drivers had the choice of a six-speed manual or a seven–speed automatic transmission
The fuel economy is admittedly pretty paltry, at a combined rating of 15 mpg. There’s only 3.5 cubic feet of space in the cargo area, so it’s not exactly a car that you’ll be packing up for a road trip or a grocery run. It may be practical as far as super cars go, but that’s about as far as you can apply that particular adjective.
But really—who buys a car like this with practicality in mind? The styling of the R8 V10 Spyder is breathtaking from any perspective, and the attention to detail is exquisite. Is it fun to drive? Oh yeah. Intuitive, nimble, and powerful, if driving the Audi RS V10 Spyder doesn’t put a smile on your face, then someone better check for a pulse. Read on for a few more details!

Is the 2015 Audi R8 V10 Convertible comfortable?

We’re very much in two-seater territory here, but those that are lucky enough to climb in the Spyder’s web will not want to leave soon. The seats are supportive and well bolstered, and can adjust to accommodate a variety of drivers. Like many supercars, it’s low to the ground and can take some climbing to get in and out of, but once you’re in there you’ll look and feel good.

Is the 2015 Audi R8 V10 Convertible reliable?

J.D. Power gave the 2015 Audi R8 a reliability rating of 3 out of 5, which is average for the industry but lower than what you would expect from other luxury cars. The R8 V10 Spyder is certainly not your average car, and one can imagine that when repairs are needed, they won’t come cheap. But again—we’re far, far away from the realm of practical everyday transportation here.

Is the 2015 Audi R8 V10 Convertible safe?

Well…to be honest, it’s probably as safe as a low-slung uber powerful ground rocket can be? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) don’t test luxury vehicles, so there’s no data to be had there. But in general,
Audi has fantastic safety ratings
, so you can feel good knowing that there’s rock-solid engineering put into every square inch of the R8.
A full complement of airbags are standard, as is traction and stability control. Front and rear parking sensors and a back-up camera are included with all V10 R8s, which will be a welcome feature as the back window is nearly impossible to see out of.

2015 Audi R8 V10 Convertible trim options

If you’ve narrowed it down to a V10 Spyder, you’ve already decided on some of the available options. At this point, you can choose between manual and automatic transmission, and between the regular or the Carbon trim options.
The Carbon trim level starts at $194,850 versus $170,350 for the regular trim, and as far as we can tell it includes things like carbon fiber mirror caps, front spoiler, and rear diffuser.
To be honest, it’s difficult to tease out just what you get with the Carbon trim except for some cosmetic touches. But if you want it you want it, and with a car like this, you gotta let your heart lead.
Other features that are standard for all V10 Spyders include:
  • Insanely adjustable 3-step heated sport seats
  • 12-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Nappa leather seat trim
  • Sport leather and aluminum steering wheel
  • Front cigar lighters
