The 2014 versa has had its fair share of problems, including four recalls to address problems with the operation of the brake pedal, the start/stop button, loose or missing bolts,and an issue with the rear seat.

Lower trim panel impending brake pedal operation: A recall was necessary to repair a lower trim panel that got in the way of pressing the brake pedal—this delay would increase the distance needed to stop the vehicle, and risked a crash and/or serious injury.

Engine start/stop button sticking: A recall was issued to repair an issue where the start/stop button would “stick” in its housing—this caused the engine to shut off without warning while driving, and was a crash risk.

Loose or missing lower body bolt: A recall was issued to replace this bolt—a loose or missing bolt can compromise the vehicle’s body integrity, increasing the risk of injury or worse in a crash.

Risk of failing rear seat latch bolt: If the rear seat latch bolt breaks, the rear seat will not perform as it's designed to during a crash, increasing the risk of injury to rear seat occupants.

The problems targeted by recalls weren’t the only issues facing the 2014 Nissan Versa. More than 100 complaints were logged by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding the Versa’s transmission:

After replacing the transmission, Versa would shake violently, after which acceleration would be slow and sluggish.

CVT would shift gears without warning and often be stuck in a lower gear.

Unexpected CVT failure where the engine makes a droning sound, and then the Versa would be undriveable.

CVT would freeze unexpectedly, necessitating putting the Versa into neutral and then back into drive, all while driving.

Transmission would slip after using battery to jumpstart another vehicle—RPMs would not go past 3.
