The 2014 BMW M5 has a 3.9-second zero to 60 time, but its 4.4L V8 engine doesn’t quite hit the speed of rivals like the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S, even with the upgraded Competition package.
Most luxury car brands offer models that strike the perfect balance between family-friendly practicality and the need for performance and speed—and the BMW M5 is just that. With comfort, luxury, and spectacularly quick capabilities, the M5 is the dream for anyone looking for a luxury sports sedan—but compared to its biggest competitors, the 2014 BMW M5 still lags.

2014 BMW M5 0-60 time

According to tests by Car and Driver, the 2014 BMW M5 clocks a real-world 0-60 time of just 3.6 seconds—although other sources suggest a time of 3.9 seconds. It races to the quarter-mile mark in 12.1 seconds and can reach 100 mph in 8.7 seconds. But if you choose the Competition package, you could kick that speed up a notch thanks to 575 horses powering the engine.
While the BMW M5 may catch up to some of its rivals on the track, its drivetrain continues to lag—it’s equipped with rear-wheel drive and never came with the option of all-wheel drive.

Which BMW M5 engine is the fastest?

While most high-performance cars offer an engine upgrade for better speed and performance, we can’t say the same about the 2014 BMW M5.
The BMW M5 comes standard with one engine: a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that makes 560 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque. If you upgrade to the Competition package, you’ll increase those horses to 575, which may not skyrocket your speed, but it does get you a revised, stiffer suspension with stronger stabilizers.

Can it beat the competition?

Compared to newer versions of the BMW M5 and other BMW models, the 2014 M5 does a pretty good job of fulfilling those speed demon desires. Still, there are better options if you’re looking for serious face-melting acceleration.
Here are the 0-60 times of some of the BMW M5’s biggest rivals in the high-performance sports sedan class:
When comparing apples to apples, it’s clear that the 2014 BMW M5 falls behind other popular sports sedans. But there’s one significant difference: price. Apart from the Dodge Charger, the BMW M5 is the most affordable model, with a used price ranging between $26,283 and $33,563, depending on the condition. So, while you may not be getting jet-speed acceleration from your M5, you are saving tens of thousands of dollars and getting a wicked cool car.
But if speed is what you’re after and you have the cash to throw around, the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S might just be what you’re after—you’ll be footing the bill over $100,000 to get behind the wheel of this speed demon.
