The most common 2013 Audi Q5 problems

The Audi Q5 doesn’t have many problems, but the ones it has are pretty big.
Audi’s dependability ranking is ironically not very dependable. Currently, the German automaker ranks in the lower third of JD Power’s reliability study. Audi had a few good years between 2015 and 2019 when it ranked in the upper echelon, but 2013 wasn’t great, especially for the Q5.
The most consistent problem that 2013 Q5 drivers experience is excessive oil consumption on models sporting a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. Drivers report having to top-up oil frequently, noting black exhaust and a burning oil smell when driving.
The issue has been raised in a 2022 class-action lawsuit in Missouri alleging that the above-mentioned oil consumption is due to ill-fitting piston rings that don’t properly seal the combustion chamber. The result can range from loss of oil to total engine failure — the lawsuit claims that Audi has been aware of this issue since 2012, but has concealed the problem and continued to sell affected models.
Engine failure can be a big problem, especially if it happens when a driver is executing maneuvers at high speed, like passing on the highway. Engine failure can affect the driver’s ability to steer, brake, and maintain speed, increasing the chances of a collision.
Excessive oil consumption represents the vast majority of complaints regarding the 2013 Audi Q5, but there are others including:
  • Air conditioning malfunction
  • Water pump failure
  • Ruptured coolant line
  • Loose timing chain
  • Squealing power windows
  • Jerky transmission
Some of these issues can lead to costly repairs, while others are mere annoyances. All, however, can cause major incidents if they happen at the wrong time — squealing power windows could put anyone on edge.
Audi has issued five recalls for the 2013 Q5 for the following issues:
  • Engine cooling system (2)
  • Engine wiring
  • Fuel system, gasoline
  • Side/window airbags
No recalls have been issued for the apparent piston ring problem at the center of the 2022 Missouri class action lawsuit.
