background
The 2011 Nissan Sentra offered not one, but two special edition trim levels: the
SE-R
and the
SE-R Spec V
. Both performance models are equipped with various components and come standard with a navigation system and a host of safety features.
If you’re looking for a practical compact sedan, the Nissan Sentra delivers. It’s an affordable option with spacious front seating, along with decent fuel economy and power.
But if the regular base
2.0
, S, SR, and SL trims don’t quite cut it in the performance department, no sweat! You have two sportier contenders in the 2011 Sentra lineup.

What is the 2011 Nissan Sentra Special Edition?

The Nissan Sentra SE-R (Special Edition-Racing) was introduced in 1991, while the SE-R Spec V (Victory Specification) hit the market in 2002. While both special edition sedans were popular during their time, both performance vehicles were discontinued by 2012.
With Kelley Blue Book’s fair market value ranging from $5,725 to $8,200, both Special Editions come with most of the SL’s standard features, like keyless entry and Bluetooth, but add a more powerful engine and sportier features not offered in the rest of the
trim levels

2011 Nissan Sentra overview

Before we dive into what makes both 2011 Special Edition sedans so special, let’s take a quick look at the Nissan Sentra.
Honestly, the Nissan Sentra is so practical that it does not stand out from the competition. In fact, some car experts might describe the compact sedan as a snooze compared to the performance power of compact rivals like the 2011
Honda Civic
and
Mazda 3
. But considering Nissan created two performance versions of the Sentra, I think we can let it slide.
In addition to practicality, the Sentra offers a spacious interior compared to competitors with 13.1 cubic feet of cargo room for the base model. Other standard base model features include 15-inch steel wheels, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, power windows and locks, and a four-speaker audio system.
If you bump up to the highest SL trim, you’ll get most of the upgrades offered with the
S
and
SR
trims, like 16-inch alloy wheels and keyless entry, but you’ll also get spectacular interior upgrades like a sunroof, heated front seats, and a navigation system.
For 2011, safety features like anti-lock brakes and electronic brake-force distribution became standard across all trim levels.
The Nissan Sentra also has a decent fuel economy when equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), receiving 27 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. However, if you opt for the six-speed manual transmission, your fuel economy will drop down slightly to 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

What’s special about the Special Edition?

While the Sentra provides a comfortable ride that will get you from point A to B with ease, it doesn’t offer a particularly exciting ride. But that’s where the Sentra SE-R and SE-R Spec V come in to pick up the performance slack.
The regular Sentra trims come standard with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 140 horsepower and 147 lb-ft of torque. But both Special Edition trims come equipped with a peppier 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that boasts 177 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque for the SE-R trim.
If this isn’t enough performance power for you, the SE-R Spec V bumps this number up to 200 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque, which will have you soaring from zero to 60 in a respectable 6.7 seconds
While the SE-R model provides many of the same offerings as the highest SR and SL trim levels, like standard 17-inch alloy wheels, the SE-R Spec V further enhances the sportiness of the SE-R with high-performance tires, a firmer suspension, larger front brakes, and lower ground clearance for more control.

2011 Nissan Sentra Special Edition vs. SL

The main difference between the regular Sentras versus the Special Editions has to do with engine performance. While both Special Edition trims provide ample power, the highest SL trim offers many of the same interior upgrades for a lower price.
The SL trim includes:
  • Leather upholstery
  • Keyless ignition/entry
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Sunroof
  • Rockford Fosgate audio system with satellite radio
  • Heated front seats
  • Navigation system
Is the SL trim a better buy? It depends on your individual needs—if you require a more thrilling ride, then either Special Edition option might be for you. But if you can live without the additional power performance, you might save by going with the SL trim that features most of the same upgrades as the SE-R and SE-R Spec V models.
