The 2009 Buick Lucerne CXL Special Edition is a stepping stone between the mid-range CXL and the top trim Super. The Special Edition includes extra comforts such as a heated steering wheel. And if that’s not enough, there’s the CXL Special Edition Luxury Package, which brings a premium audio system and interior wooden flourishes.
The luxury, grandparent-friendly Buick has been a mainstay in the luxury sedan segment for decades because it reliably delivers the goods—smooth and refined road manners with ample power, spaciousness, and comfort. Buicks sport luxurious interiors to make any ride pleasant, not to mention throwing in a few technological gizmos to slowly bring those oldsters into the next century.

What is the Buick Lucerne CXL Special Edition?

The Buick Lucerne CXL Special Edition was unveiled as a trim between the medium-range CXL and the top trim
Buick Lucerne Super
. Starting at $33,120, and available now for between $15,000 to $16,000 used, it includes unique interior flourishes, as well as extra options and packages, including the CXL Luxury Package. This package included chrome wheels, heated and cooled front seats, and a heated walnut burl steering wheel.

2021 Buick Lucerne overview

Following in the line of classic Buicks such as the Electra, Park Avenue, and Roadmaster, the Lucerne is a made-in-America luxury sedan, sporting a quiet, comfortable ride and a refined driving feel. It doesn’t have the power of the 2009
Toyota Avalon
, the loaded interior of the 2009
Lexus ES
, or the out-and-out luxury of the 2009
Hyundai Genesis
, but it's a competent all-around sedan with something for everyone.
The 2009 Lucerne offers a solid amount of power perfect for leisurely Sunday drives, and a cabin that is roomy, comfortable, and quiet. The Lucerne offers a respectable 21.5 mpg—a figure that won’t win any awards but was still decent when the 2009 Lucerne rolled off the production line.
The Lucerne also offers a very reasonable 17 cubic feet of trunk space.
Key specs:
  • $29,265 starting MSRP
  • 3.9L V6 Flex-fuel engine
  • 227 horsepower
  • 238 lb-ft of torque
  • 17 mpg city, 28 mpg highway
  • Front-wheel drive

What’s special about the Special Edition?

The Buick Lucerne wasn’t the most exciting luxury sedan that rolled off the line in 2009, but the CXL Special Edition does add a bit of pizzazz to an otherwise non-descript cruiser. While the CXL Special Edition doesn’t automatically make the Lucerne exciting, it does add some liveliness to the overall experience.
The most eye catching touches available on the Special Edition are the chrome wheels, heated and cooled front seats, and heated walnut trimmed steering wheel. Also, the CXL Special Edition came with an option for the CXL Luxury Package, which cost $1,095 and included a 9-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system to pump up those drives to the flea market.
The Special Edition also featured mounted audio and cruise controls, too.

2009 Buick Lucerne CXL Special Edition vs. Super

While the CXL Special Edition certainly gave Buick-ers an extra shot of value, it sits below the top trim—the Super. This top trim represents the 2009 Lucerne at its boldest and most powerful. With a starting price of $40,205, and available today for between $4,300 to $6,500 used, the Lucerne Super boasted a bigger engine, premium interior, and a standard premium audio system. Here’s what else you’d get with the Lucerne Super:
  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Chrome waterfall grill
  • Power-tilt telescopic steering wheel
  • Magnetic Ride Control adaptive suspension
  • Leather-wrapped instrument panel
  • A 6-CD changer
  • Ebony perforated suede interior
And speaking of power, the Super trim gets you a bigger, 4.6 L V8 engine, with a stout 292 horsepower and 288 lb-ft of torque.
So which Lucerne would be the better buy, the CXL Special Edition or the Super? That depends on you, ultimately. The Super gets more power with the bigger engine, and there are some extra interior flourishes that you wouldn’t get on the Special Edition trim, notably the suede upholstery. Granted, the Super trim has depreciated more over time, so the CXL Special Edition might hold more value in the long run.
