Why your 2002 Acura MDX needs a radio code

Car radios are one of the most frequently stolen vehicle components, so as a method of theft prevention, Acura programmed its radios to display the “code” message when they get disconnected from their power source.
The bad news is that your MDX will demand a radio code not only when the radio is stolen, but also when the battery dies or gets replaced–as you may have learned the hard way.
The good news is that retrieving your radio code is usually pretty quick and easy once you know where to look.

How to find your 2002 Acura MDX radio code

Your first step should be to reset your radio by holding down the power button for a few seconds. Sometimes that’s all you need to free your radio from “code” mode.
If that doesn’t work, then there are a few places you should look for the radio code. First, look for a decal on the inside wall of your glove compartment. If it’s not there, check the door jamb and trunk jamb, or look for the anti-theft identification card in your owner’s manual. If you still can’t find it, try checking the underside of the engine compartment fuse box cover.
The stick will likely have two numbers, the five-digit number is the radio code, and the 8-digit number is the radio serial number.

How to look up a 2002 Acura MDX radio code

If you couldn’t find the radio code in any of the aforementioned areas, there’s still hope. You can still retrieve the radio code using your
Acura vehicle identification number (VIN)
and the radio serial number.
The VIN can be found in several places–on your registration documents, insurance slips, or on your driver's side dash at the base of the windshield.
The device serial number, on the other hand, will require a trick. Unless for some reason you were able to find the serial number on your radio code search, you will need to know a special order of operations to get your radio to display it:
  • Turn the car on
  • Turn the radio off
  • Hold down the 1 and 6 buttons simultaneously
  • Turn the radio on while still holding the 1 and 6
Your radio should display an eight-digit number, this is the serial code. You might get two sets of numbers will some letters preceding them, ignore the letters and just write down the numbers provided.
Once you have your VIN and serial number, you can contact Acura customer service at (800) 382-2238, use Acura’s
online retrieval tool
, or take your car to a nearby Acura dealership.
