Zooming Back Into 2006 with the Mazdaspeed 6

The Mazdaspeed 6 was a fun and powerful ride, and though it had a limited production, if you can find one used it should be relatively affordable.

The Mazdaspeed 6, also known as simply the Mazda 6, had a production run of nearly 20 years in the United States. It was the very first
Mazda
to use the "Stylish, Insightful, and Spirited" design language that is the basis of every current Mazda car. With the Mazda 6 gone, the sole sedan left in the lineup is the smaller Mazda 3.
While the Mazda 6 may have been killed off, that definitely doesn't mean it was a bad car. Even the older models were still a blast to drive, as underlined by

. How does the Mazdaspeed 6 from 2006 compare to the last iteration of this beloved vehicle?

What made the 2006 Mazdaspeed 6 so good

The 2006 Mazdaspeed 6 is actually a high-performance variant of the Mazda 6 from the first generation. The first-gen car had relatively reserved powertrains, available with either a 160-horsepower four-cylinder or 215-horsepower V6 engine.
On the other hand, the 2006 Mazdaspeed 6 packs 274 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. That powerhouse comes paired with a six-speed manual gearbox and standard AWD. During C/D's testing, the Mazdaspeed 6 hit 60 mph in a fitting 6.2 seconds.
This Mazda has a racing-tuned suspension and a beefier set of brakes. A few cross beams were also added to the body to enhance its stability around quick turns.
Overall, C/D was impressed by the Mazdaspeed 6's agility and handling. However, testers did wish for bigger tires and less understeer.
On the outside, it looks nearly identical to the regular first-gen Mazda 6. A keen eye could probably spot the distinctive front fenders, different rear spoiler, and an updated wheel design. Interior changes were limited to a few leather components and bucket seats.

For 2021, the Mazda 6 comes with a standard four-cylinder that makes 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The turbo-four on higher trims makes up to 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque if you use premium gas.
It comes with a six-speed automatic instead of the manual, and it's only available in FWD. The Mazda 6's handling is just as sporty as ever, and it's much more efficient compared to the 2006 model. A lot of updated infotainment tech and safety features are also included in the standard trim.

.
A new 2021 Mazda 6 retailed for $24,475-$35,900, depending on the trim. While you're guaranteed to get a lightly-used vehicle if you choose the newest version, it's not as powerful as the Mazdaspeed 6.
